iStride Lite - Steve
iStride Lite is an accelerometer based pedometer for the iPhone and iPod touch, it features:
Calorie burn Average speed Distance covered Adjustable Sensitivity History tracking, all activity is rolled up into day blocks History viewing - Table mode History viewing - Chart mode
Operating
To start iStride Lite, go to the Steps tab and slide the green button to the left, to stop the pedometer side the red button to the right.
Once running do not lock your iPhone/iPod as this will prevent it from collecting data however the proximity sensor is enabled to turn the screen off when it's in your pocket and all of the controls are locked.
The pedometer is automatically paused after approximately 30 seconds of inactivity, data will only be collected while you are active.
Configuring
Configuring Your Step Size
To calculate your step size walk 20 steps then measure the distance covered and divide by the number of steps taken.
Your step size can also be calculated in the following way
For Women: Step = Height * 0.413 / 2
For Men: Step = Height * 0.415 / 2
The average step size for a man is 15in. / 38cm and for a woman the average is 13in. / 33cm.
Configuring Sensitivity
The sensitivity level will need be adjusted to account for which pocket you keep your iPhone/iPod in, and the style of clothing you wear. This may take a little trial and error, however a sensitivity level of 15-20 works well for me.
Limitations: Application does not function in “Background” mode, it will only count steps while the application is active. The accelerometer does not function while the device is sleeping so the application inhibits sleep however the proximity sensor is enabled to turn off the screen when the device is put into a pocket, this will limit the impact on battery performance.
History tracking in iStride Lite version is limited to the last 5 times used. 2010 Steven Taylor
