Disappointed -- was hoping for more   I had used Skyscape's long ago on my Palm, but had switched to Epocrates. I tried this out for the past day and was disappointed. First off, despite the advertised screen image, there is no 5MCC available. This app really has 3 parts: RxDrugs, Archimedes (calculator), and OCM (clinical outlines). The calculator is ok, but a bit clunky/awkward -- Mediquations is better. RxDrugs has good basic drug info, but is poorly formatted and lacks the "polish" and features of the free Epocrates product -- e.g., a drug interaction checker, pill pictures, pill identifier, adverse rxns, black box warnings, etc etc. The OCM outline product looked interesting, but the content was scattered and confusing to navigate. Overall, not bad for a free product, but there are better free products out there already. - Skyscape Medical Resources review by CA MD
Fast, functional and beautiful   Have owned skyscape applications since my first 5mcc on the original palm pilot in 2000. They have the best products and interface. I switched to iphone recently, but have had to carry my palm t/x as well to use all the clinical information and archimedes medical calculator from skyscape. glad to say that the iphone native implementation from skyscape is fast and functional as ever. The interface is even more beautiful to make it much more fun to use. I can truly retire my palm. Thanks skyscape!I called them today to find out about the status of additional products to add (interested in 5mcc and Abx guide). It wil be a couple of weeks according to them before I can purchase them (something about how iphone products can only be distributed through iTune). The outlines in clinical medicine is decent but I wanted to get 5mcc as well. Guess I'll have to wait just a little longer... - Skyscape Medical Resources review by DocNS
Best Yet   I bought the first generation iPhone just for this application. I also had the first generation skyscape since the beginning. I have been disappointed from day one with the speed of the edge network. I work in an ER without wifi and the applications for skyscape with the web apps have been painfully slow. I really needed my Davis drug guild, and I also used RN notes as well as my Taylor. I soon abandon my Davis Drug guild completely for skyscape as soon as Epocrates came out. It was much faster and I didn’t have to scroll forever as I did with Davis. The problem with Epocrates is it is limited in its information and Davis is much better. Since this SDK came out skyscape upgraded all of my web-apps for free! They work great, and everything I thought it could be when I bought the phone. I feel like it's Christmas, could not be better! Needless to say I’m back to Davis! - Skyscape Medical Resources review by GavinP
Great resource for any medical professional   This program opens up a large medical database for use in any clinical site. I am a medical student so clinical info and calculators are gladly welcomed to the iPhone. Skyscape also promises to add a great amount of content in the future. Great addition. - Skyscape Medical Resources review by PRDr
Somewhat disappointed   As an RN I have been using many (18 +) of the Skyscape products for years on my PocketPC and found them to be invaluable. So, when I saw that Skyscape had the free apps I was very excited. However, as I had purchased and downloaded one program prior to the iPhone without knowing you had to connect to the web to use it, I was very disappointed to learn that this has not changed. There are too many times when a program is needed but you aren't able to connect to the internet for one reason or another or you have a very slow connection due to your location so it becomes rather useless. Also, as anyone who has purchased any of the programs know, you must renew your subscription every year. So, for example, 5-Minute Clinical Consult is $79.95 to purchase, one year later you must pay $63.96 to continue to receive updates for it. So don't think you will receive free updates like the other apps we have download for the iPhone. There is no doubt that Skyscape has some great products, so I am giving them 5 stars for the free apps, but 2 stars for the costs to purchase and update their programs & the fact that they will stay web based. If other companies can keep the costs down AND make their products non-web based, so can Skyscape. - Skyscape Medical Resources review by bruble
Subscription based service ripoff   So i just talked to a rep and they said for the iphone platform all of the resources are subscription based, meaning after one year...you have to pay AGAIN to keep using the same resources...This is rediculous...all other platforms you are still able to use the software, but just won't get updates...I don't want to keep paying 35 dollars a year just to be able to use the same medical dictionary!!!! or 50 dollars a year to use harrisons...I'd rather use my other PDA and be able to use the resources indefinitely after I buy it!!! - Skyscape Medical Resources review by Seansk
All smiles   I have been using skyscape products on various palms for years and now it is on the iphone. This app brings what i know to be an invaluable resource to my daily practice. I have three words: QUALITY, RELIABILITY, USABILITY. Thank you. - Skyscape Medical Resources review by Palliative Doc
ONLY a yearly subscription service   It's a shame Skyscape chose to operate this as a subscription service. I will not keep paying for the same product yearly. Tell me how the updates justify buying the entire product over and over evey year. Does a medical dictionary really change that much?No way. - Skyscape Medical Resources review by Notasucker
Great opportunity... But pricing plan fails!!   I have used Skyscape on my Palm and was desperately wating for a native iPhone edition. It is a great product with many useful resources, but I was VERY disappointed with the pricing plan they chose to use for iPhone users. All products are quite expensive and are for only a 1 year subscription. A medical dictionary for $35 for one year?!!?!? Seriously?!? It is a shame Skyscape chose to do this. (Frankly they are descriminating against iPhone users, since they don't do this for other platforms.) With this plan it is completely cost prohibitive. They will get a single star. If they change the pricing plan I'll give them the 5-stars their products deserve. It's my little way of protesting and I encourage you all to do the same. The basic program is FREE as advertised, but to get any real content you have to buy an expensive 1-year subscription. Avoid this program until they change the pricing!!! - Skyscape Medical Resources review by THopMS
Great content, not so ethical   The decision to screw iphone users with a yearly subscription is unscrupulous ... Who banks enough to spend hundreds of dollars annually just to access books that may or may not be updated? Ridiculous. - Skyscape Medical Resources review by Kaelic
Device-residing medical apps finally for iPhone   This app is a portal to your Skyscape medical reference titles. Some free apps are included to get you started. You can then download iPhone versions you've paid for. Be warned that as of 14 October 2008 the ability to purchase, then register the app is not yet functional (Skyscape Support says it should be active by 1 November). In the meantime you will have access to the web-based versions. The portal emulates the Palm OS layout and navigation but takes advantage of the larger screen size for finger tip selection. The apps do not take advantage of all the capabilities of the iPhone yet, but if you are used to the Palm or Windows Mobile versions you will find the transition pretty seamless. Skyscape has figured out how to get around trying to post and update apps to the App Store with this portal. The upside is that this give Skyscape more control of updates and subscriptions. One downside is that you must manually enter a 15-digit serial number for each title purchased. Overall, it is great to be away from web-based references and finally have fully functional medical applications. - Skyscape Medical Resources review by BrentRN
Great Medical Resource!   Considering how much medical books cost these days as well how much it costs to subscribe to online services such as MD Consult - Skyscape is reasonably priced. It's great to have speedy iPhone access to a complete medical library without resorting to connecting to online resources. If you watch the tutorial on the Skyscape web site there are many shortcuts to aide in navigating from one resource to another. - Skyscape Medical Resources review by Andrew Schuman MD
The interface is terrible; resources are overpriced.   [I write from the perspective of a currently-4th-year medical student, an gadget geek, and a relatively young guy with a Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science--for what it's worth.] The interface is terrible. I think that's a safe, incontrovertible statement. The interface has been dragged all the way from the Palm Pilot devices circa 1998 and jerry-rigged onto the iPhones screen. The interface is slow, buggy, and unintuitive. It's a very un-Apple, un-iPhone experience. My second point might be argued against by some--this is portal app provides access to medical resources, the prices for which are shockingly high. In many cases, it'd be cheaper to buy the paper-bound textbook. You might argue that Skyscape offers you the opportunity to pay a premium for the feature of carrying around many textbooks in your pocket, but there are significant downsides to this "opportunity" as well. You are actually paying for "subscriptions" from Skyscape for the resources you purchase (e.g. $45 per year for textbook XYZ). That automatically-renewing subscription fee guarantees you carry the most recent edition of textbook XYZ, and I'm pretty sure you get to keep the old version if you decide to not renew your subscription (though I'm not 100% sure about that). Still, like magazines that offer FREE TRIALS(!) if you just give them your credit card number, this creates the added hassle of concerning yourself with renewing and managing your account with Skyscape, remembering cancel subscriptions you may no longer use, and so on.More frustrating, resources purchased through Skyscape aren't transferrable between devices. For example, a couple years ago I purchased Stedman's dictionary for the Palm (from Skyscape). I've upgraded to the iPhone now (a VASTLY superior device) but I can't take my Stedman's dictionary with me. If I want to load Stedman's onto my iPhone, I have to purchase it again! All the while, my paper-and-ink Stedman's has sat on my desk and been flawlessly handy through numerous product transitions. I wish I could say the same about the digital version. I wish Skyscape allowed transferring resources between devices. (It's true that you can pay them an extra $25 per year for this service, which is an already an affront to good conscience, but no fee allows you to transfer devices to the iPhone or iPod Touch. That service is only available between Palm, Windows CE and Blackberry.) - Skyscape Medical Resources review by George Shaw
Excellent Application from Skyscape   This is a wonderful application. The free content is comprehensive and incudes a drug database, clinical resource and Archimedes medical calculator with hundreds of calculations. Skyscape now also has paid products available such as the 5mcc. Most products have content regularly updated (except a handful such as a dictionary), so have no problem with a reduced price subscription. With rapidly changing medical content would rather stay updated with an active subscription, than using obsolete content. The free MedAlerts is great too as it keeps me informed of the daily breaking news for my specialty. - Skyscape Medical Resources review by MacDoc99
Finally..   Its finally out! And I'm glad. great tool for rotations and practice. I've waited long enough! (now how about some more FREE apps for us med students :) - Skyscape Medical Resources review by pakman_DO_WUHS

Yearly subscription??   This yearly subscription thing is total crap!!!!! I was so excited to see this app but I refuse to buy only yearly rates!!! I want to buy one with lifetime price!! Come on please give us this option Skyscape! - Skyscape Medical Resources review by Josher3275
Ready for Prime Time - Great free apps and excellent paid apps choice   I had downloaded the free apps and were a nice start but really needed the paid references such as DrDrugs, Labs360 and 5MCC. Got these and they work great. These and other hundreds of apps are already available for purchase at Skyscape website. I never realized at first but clicking around the app found out that the 'Stat' tab provides free medical alerts that get updated daily with clinically relevant news. Really great tidbits available daily. Initially, I was not ready to give up my Palm, but Apple has sure made it easy to get and install apps, and Skyscape has done a great job porting their apps as they work very similarly on the iPhone. - Skyscape Medical Resources review by McDoc4
Needs a lot of work   Epocrates drug database more comprehesive, easier to read and navigate. I used Skyscape all the time on my TREO but it is not ready for the IPhone. Missing many of the resources (as native app's) ie.. IV drug reference that I used freq. I am a Critical Care nurse and a nurse administrator. I will stick with Epocrates for now. - Skyscape Medical Resources review by annie511rn
