Smart Dial allows you to quickly dial your contacts by spelling their name directly on the number keypad. (e.g. Dial 6275 for Mark or 826637 for Tanner)

HOW TO USE: Spell your contact's first OR last name with the keypad. Note: To spell 'C', there is NO NEED to press 2 three times. Once will do the job. Tap the down arrow to view next contacts. Seems to work very well... ...but it needs a reverse scroll key. If you have 15 guys named John and you accicentally pass the one you're looking for, you either have to start over or scroll through and around.

OK, but needs more work... Works as advertised, but ultimately not as convenient as I had hoped. One of the things I miss the most from my Palm Treo is the ability to look up any contact with as few as two keystrokes. On the Treo, this is accomplished by typing the first letter of the first name and the first letter of the last name. If there's more than one match, each subsequent letter of the last name further narrows the result list. Using numeric keypad letters instead of a full keyboard complicates the issue, but adding a similar "First then Last" priority mode may make this app more useful than it is now.

Finally!!! If you've used a smart dialer before; you probably miss it. If you haven't, you need to try it out. Dial the name or number from the same keypad.I've used WM and BB phones in the past, and so have missed the smart dialer feature ever since I went to the iPhone. Actually, most of the people I know upgraded from the BB Curve to the iPhone and miss this feature. Thank you Gary for adding it!This has been a great v1.0 app--installed without a hitch and was able to use it right away. If you have multiple entries with the same first name (850+ contact listings--I do), just use the number pad to type in a portion of the name, then use the bottom left arrow to go to the next entry. If you have "search recent first" on in the settings, that name will now be the first name that pops up the next time you search with that string.On top of the stability and usability of Smart Dial (and its keeping with Apple's aesthetic style), the developer has been very responsive. I'm not even sure what can be improved in an update; but if we find anything, I'm sure he'll take it into consideration. I'll be recommending it to friends. - Smart Dial review by The_Dude101
Smart dial--a near perfect app Hands down this is the best app I’ve downloaded—very fine idea. Just one little, easy to fix thought—the letters are hard to read for us old folks. The truth is that the dial screen for this app is actually more centered on letters than numbers, so why aren’t the letters larger and white and the numbers smaller? Small dark grey letters on a green background are a real challenge. This should be an easy change or a settings option and would make this screen MUCH easier to use by older users. Great app! Nice to have this function back after having used in in WM for the past couple of years. No issues but would like to see some of the other reviewer's suggested features added. Also, it would be helpful, at least to me, to have a space key. I have a lot of contacts and many share common last names. I would like to be able to insert a space at some point in the search (e.g. when a last name ends) and then keep typing to further narrow the search vs. having to stop once the last name is entered and then use the scroll bar to chose the entry I want. - Smart Dial review by john1027
The best search/dialer available and I've tried them all Coming from a WM device, this was one feature that I truly missed until I found Smartdial. It is the best search/dialer that I have come across and I think I have tried them all, even Quickgold! I highly recommend Smartdial. Only negative is that there is noticeable lag after initial letter is pressed. Any way to speed that up? Granted I do have 1140 contacts. Suggestions would include adding an "up" arrow to the existing "down" arrow. Not required since you can just scroll through all found contacts but it would be nice. good idea but... This a really good idea, but after trying to use it for a while. I find that keeping the frequent contacts in your favorites and double tapping the home button to get to them is much faster. Also, when I've been looking for someone who is not in my favorites, using the alphabet (on the right of the address book) or the new search option already in the iphone is a bit faster...Try it, maybe you'll find it more useful than I did. - Smart Dial review by sowza
Great job - the fastest at finding contacts I have tried (and purchased) a lot of dialers and voice dialers this is the first one that hit the mark.
Only thing I would ask for is larger letters on the keypad. I need glasses to read them.
