Great start, lots of information   Nicely laid out, great to-go information. What I would like to see in an update. Non-distorted maps (Switzerland for instance); tilt enabled; additional map of country within the world map for reference, not just a close up of the selected country; maybe even an option to hear the national anthem for each country.I'm sure there is more that people want to see, but that's my first initial impression. Well done!

Awesome!   I was a bit hesitant at first given the price but I decided to give it a try and it's really nice! The layout is excellent/attractive and the information is well presented, accurate & up to date. Very cool app.

Useful application, needs some tweaks.   I bought version 1.0 for $4.99 August 19 2008. This app will be a must for me in the future. However, in order to make it something enjoyable here are my thoughts of needed enhancements. It needs:Horizontal mode (looking at the scrunched up maps drives me crazy. Reading in horizontal mode mode would be nice)Quick search letters on the right as seen in the phone app.Save last position (I was surprised that it didn't)Why is the “county list” and “world factbook 2008” are needed on the main page. Screen space is super important on the iPhone. The icon is ugly. Needs to be slicker. The oceans should have some sort of icon, because all the other countries have the flag next to them.I don't like the westernnits load screen in the beginning. Should be replaced with "world factbook 2008".Those are the important things they need to né fixed yet there are other ideas that I would like to share.More Search optioned by region, religion, language, ethnicity.Under resources have main common language. It could show a little bit of the writing.Ajust text size buttons while readingUseful application, needs some tweaks.

Not easy.   With the lack of an alphabet index (like in Contacts) you have to flick through a dozen or more screens to find the country you are interested in. Countries are mostly in alphabetical order, but not entirely...for example Taiwan is second from the last and the EU is at the very end of the list, which is inexplicable.Maps are distorted, the aspect ratio was not preserved. So the map of the United States has the US being taller than it is wide. You can slide maps from side-to-side but cannot zoom...and the print on many of the maps is a couple of pixels high and cannot be read. (Such as the US Map.)The text is in a serif font, and there is extensive use of italics, so reading can be a bit of a challenge...although it isn't impossible.,The application exceeds the 10 Megabyte limit for 3G/Edge downloading, so you MUST download through iTunes. This is generally useful to have as a reference. But it seems like it is a swift and hasty implementation.

Great to have the info handy, but mediocre presentation   The CIA World Factbook is one of my most-used bookmarks on the Web, and while I have it downloaded to my laptop for using offline as well, I don't carry my laptop everywhere nor do I necessarily want to get it out of my backpack and open it up when I'm reading the newspaper and I just want to remind myself quickly of the general geography of Iran or something. So I'm fine with paying a few bucks to have the World Factbook in my pocket, too. But $5 is a tad high for public-domain information and maps when the presentation is weak. The maps in particular -- this is the iPhone, I can zoom in on all my photos and on webpages and on all the documents that I've stored in FileMagnet and so on, so why on earth can't I zoom in on a map? Or view it in landscape mode? I agree with other comments about the unattractive font and layout (why is there always a line space between a subheading and its section, but none between the section and the next subheading? it should be just the other way around), the oddness of the menu items that are out of alignment because they don't have flags (or their flags are a different shape, such as Nepal), and so on.Also, the very useful appendixes and reference maps are not here -- the reference maps in particular show continents or regions so they're just as important as the individual country maps, and it's a real shame not to have them, especially as they are just as free for the taking as everything else in the World Factbook. And frankly, given that Western ITS has done such a mediocre job of porting the information over, making me gaze upon their logo for two or three seconds every time I turn on the program seems a bit irritating. Everything terrific about this program is in the quality of the content, which is the CIA's; what Western ITS has done with it is serviceable but no more. Give me an update with the reference maps included and all the maps zoomable and viewable in landscape mode and I won't mind the pushy splash screen so much.If you just want to have the information offline and don't specifically care if it's on your iPhone, the website lets you download the whole thing to your computer. Then put an alias for its index page on your desktop or wherever else it's handy for you. Google "World Factbook".

Only countries   This world factbook only has information on countries. If you wanted information on New York, you won't find it. Also, there is not an easy way to skip to a country you want information on. For instance, if you want information on the United States, you have to scroll down over dozens of countries. It would be better if there were a search option so you could type in the first few letters of the country and have it autocomplete for you.

Nice for IPod Touch   For an IPod touch user, it makes for a handy off-line reference tool. If you're using an IPhone or otherwise connected all the time, there's no reason to get this app since it duplicates the CIA Factbook.

Readability and Fonts   Love the data, hate the presentation. Serif typefaces do not work well at such a small size, especially white on black. A simple change for better readability would be a web ready font like Arial. And lose the italics, they add nothing.

Do you need this close at hand?   Yes, I agree with those saying it's a rehash of public domain. I'm sure it took some work to build the app, but $5.00 is an stupendous amount to pay for this info. Probably only one person in ten million need this info on their person anyway. Most people who buy an iPhone or iPod have a computer at home or library close by so it's really not necessary to download this. I wish I could get my money back!

Decent Application with room for improvement   I was thrilled to see a new app added to the Reference section of the App Store - I was starting to get worried that we'd only see more and morevariations of bibles added to this important section of the store. So I decided to buy this application as it is helpful/interesting to learnmore about the many countries that make up this planet. Overall, the app is nicely designed, but there are a few things that needto be or should be updated/fixed. - The BORING Times Roman font style used in the country details is not very Apple-like. Time Roman is soooooo Windows font style. Developers, pleaseupdate this, change it to a font that is easier to read on the device and is more attractive than that tired old Times Roman Font. It's as if you copied and pastedthe details from another source directly into your program.- Please add a way to more quickly scroll through the country list - getting to the USA listing requires multiple flicks of the finger to get to the bottom of the long country list -hopefully they will add something similar to what is used in Contact Application along the right side of the screen - the alphabet listing whereby you can quickly jump to another letter.- As another reviewer has mentioned, the maps need some work - many don't seem to be sized correctly and are distorted - would be awesome to have alarger, slightly more detailed and interesting map picture whereby you can pinch and stretch as in google maps. Better maps should be added - the ones shownare very basic and not visually interesting.- The country flags should have the ability to be displayed when the phone is turned horizontal so they fill the entire screen, allowing the user to see more detail.Overall, a nice, useful app that will hopefully get some updates to make it an awesome application. The price is a tad high for what you get in my opinion.
