A pretty good backgammon version This one is actually pretty good. Unlike a more expensive Chess/Backgammon version I tried, this one has a decent AI. I'm a pretty decent player, but not an expert, and at the Expert level, it's beating me 2-1. Most importantly, I'm not seeing the obvious stupid errors that most handheld backgammon AI's make, which make winning too easy and take the sense of accomplishment out of victory. This one seems fairly smart. The gameplay interface is very smooth: when you roll and touch a point to move a piece, the points you can move it to are highlighted and have a thicker touch-range so that you can pick them more easily -- a big issue in touch-based UIs. The doubling cube strategy seemed Ok to my casual-player eye -- perhaps a true expert in the game could analyze its strengths and weaknesses better. And you can turn off the doubling cube if you don't want to use it.There is an auto-move option that you can turn on, and then when you touch a point it moves the piece for you -- but if you have two choices of where to move it to, the computer picks one for you automatically and there's no way that I saw to make it choose the other destination. So I've been playing with that feature off.The only real downside to the program is that it rolls and moves its own pieces so fast that I sometimes miss what it did. I'd rather it moved more slowly, or rolled and at least left its dice showing afterwards so that you could figure it out. Maybe they could add this as a settings option in the next version (hint, hint).On the plus side: when you have more than 5 pieces on a point, it display a tiny number on the end piece to tell you how many there are, rather than trying to simulate depth or do something "fancy". Sometimes simpler is just plain better.I really like this game, and I'd definitely recommend it to other casual players.

Very capable player I consider myself an expert, from years of playing on the FIBS backgammon server against real players and (sometimes) "bots" of varying skill levels. I'm a bit rusty, having stopped playing regularly a few years ago, so playing now against this program on the iphone is refreshing.
From a skill level, its gameplay when set on the highest level is good, although now that I'm getting my "game" back, I'm winning most multi-game matches. It's sufficiently strong to make me work at it.
The doubling cube DOES work (some reviews have said it doesn't). Enable it in settings, and then tap Menu when you want to double. I've had it double me, too, so it knows enough to do this when it's in a strong position.
Graphics are decent, but I wish the board was larger, and/or there would be support for additional boards, pieces, etc. Moving pieces works reasonably well, although they're a bit small and this takes getting used to. I like the mode best where it's less automatic; and you have to tap the piece you're going to move, then tap the destination. But being able to drag, as an option is something I'd like to try.
There's no sound, which is a shame, as one of the very nice/addictive things about playing via the MacFibs client app on the internet FIBS server, years ago, was hearing the sound of the dice rolling, and pieces being moved.
Finally: as good as this is for individual play against the iPhone (and for the price, it's definitely worth the cost of admission), what I'd really like to see is someone write an iPhone client for the FIBS server, to enable "live" play against a huge variety of "real" opponents worldwide.
Overall summary: nice game, works and plays very well, I'm more than happy with it.

Good Purchase for Backgammon Enthusiasts As I have said in other reviews, I like to review products on five criteria, one point for each:1) Is it stable, reasonably quick and well-designed for the platform (i.e., iPhone)? YES - very fast and stable2) Is it easy to use, well-documented/supported and intuitive? MOSTLY - somewhat tricky, especially the settings menu differences, and with no real help it took time to figure out, but overall good3) Is the quality, design, graphics and performance good (based on what you would expect from the description)? YES - side note, if you want a "cheat," if you're about to get gammoned, just "resign game" and you only lose 1 point4) Is it a good value, for what you get AND compared to other similar products? YES - from what I've seenIf yes to all 4 above - 5) Is it a "best-in-class," "must-have" that should appeal to a wide audience? N/AIn case you wondered what my ratings are worth... here's how I have rated apps, hardware and software -1 star = 7%, 2 star = 28% 3 star = 32% 4 star = 24% 5 star = 9%

AWEFUL I typically do not take the time to write a review so if I feel this strongly about something it must be bad. How can you play a game of chance when the element of chance is taken out? You can't have 'loaded' dice when you increase the level of difficulty... In any game you play you want random and fair results. If you want AI to be better then get some books on the strategy and probabilities (kind of like Vegas does with their card games) and apply them... but to give the house the roll it needs defeats why you play the game. Horrible... a complete waste of money.

Pleasant game, but suspiciously lucky I like the look and feel of this game a lot, and it's become a regular time-killer for me lately. Nevertheless, my perception agrees with others here who are saying that the AI gets a suspiciously high number of lucky dice rolls at the highest difficulty level -- in particular, it always seems to get a great roll right after I've doubled it. So that part of it is unsatisfying. Even so, it's a pleasant way to waste five or ten minutes.
