Could be the one to beat. At first blush, this app seems limited in functionality vs. the celebrated BeatMaker (which I own, and love). Further noodling reveals, however, that iDrum is more of an "instrument", and as such, it has a lot of flexibility that BeatMaker can't touch (no pun intended). When you first get into iDrum, you see that a "song" can only be 16 measures long.... but when you dig a little deeper, you realize that through the process of triggering multiple measure-groups (called "islands") you can create a huge arrangement that can go on for an hour, but only if you are recording your performance through an analog line into a separate recording app (pro tools, GB, etc.). Again, think of it as an instrument, vs. an all-in-one song composition app, and you'll begin to see the elegance. With BeatMaker, the whole "song" is built within the app, through incessant flipping back-and-forth between menus and screens. Then, you export the thing, and add your keys, axe, etc. Honestly, The idea of doing all of that on the iPhone is giving me finger cramps. With iDrum, you create a four-bar rhythm, copy and paste w/ ease, tweak and alter passages quickly, then group those passages into trigger groups that you then "perform" into your Desktop-based recording software. It allows for a bit of spontaneity that is absent in BeatMaker. With all of this being said, there are a few MAJOR updates that would crown this app as the top-of-the-heap. Namely; A)The ability to export an on-the-fly performance as an internal mixdown. B) A "BeatPack"-type desktop app to allow new kit/sample importing, and the exporting of the afore-mentioned "mixdown". C) Some effects - Reverb, Echo, Phase, Reverse, etc. The more I fool with it, the more I can see how I'd be more likely to work with iDrum over Beatmaker in an on-the-go situation. For $5, I recommend you take the chance.... only read the website's manual closely, or you'll miss a few KEY functions that make the app so flexible.iZotope.... you have a brilliant app on your hands. PLEASE consider a few of my suggestions above. BeatMaker still holds the crown, as far as feature-richness goes. You can change that.

I bought this app cause it looked to cool and I couldn't wait for a possible price drop
This game is super fun to play around with and I love techno so I'm having a blast with this app
I'm hoping for a possible update in the future that comes with some more sounds :)

The Beginning of My Palm-top Studio iDrum is a nifty piece of software. The UI is carefully thought out. The sounds are fun. I'm really enjoying myself, and I think it is well worth the $5 price of admission. For me, one more feature would make this a killer app--ability to export into either Garage Band or iDrum's desktop program (also a very well done program.) Good work guys.

Unobstructed creativity! Fantastic app. I played with it for 20min or so, and it's a pleasure to use. More intuitive and faster to use than Beatmaker. Easy to create custom kits out of a sizeable selection of categorized sounds. Easy to record a beat 'live' (not step-sequenced). Nice and simple 'tap and hold' to erase a flubbed recording on a pad. Easy panning, great selection of preset beats, beautiful and original UI design. Mind you, I'm not the developer, AND I'm sober. Only requests so far: a song sequencer, a quick 'clear pattern' option, a 'copy pattern' option, and the ability to pan a pad on a 'per-beat' basis. Perhaps in addition to 'up/down' selection of sample volume, in that same mode allow 'left/right' dragging for pan settings? Either way, awesome!

Rad I have both Beatmaker and now this. I think both apps are killer but this one was way more intuitive and easy to get into. If there were any updates made I would like to be able to have customizable time signatures, I'm mean 4/4 is cool but it would be really awesome to be able to do a few measures in 7/4 then a few in 3/4. For some reason that is not a big thing with these sorts of programs, but if added it would probably interest many more serious musicians. That being said this is probably the most fun music app here, and I'll probably end up getting the hip hop one too.

FUN! But am I missing something? I don't understand the tempo/sync issue... It seems odd (I'll come back to that). Other than this problem, it's an intuitive-meets-enjoyable design and lots of fun. Seriously though, I don't understand how something like this would be programmed with a faulty internal metronome. It's not a concept I'm really grasping well... how could this happen? It's not analog, so how is it possible that the tempo drifts?

Love this app! But.... This application would be so much sweeter if you added in the ability to increase the overall volume of the created ringtones even further than the current limit. Allot of the ringtones I have created so far come out too soft in volume to actually use as a useful ringtone with the iPhone. If you added in a few more DB increase, it would be helpful, especially for 1st generation iPhones, in which the speakers as not as loud as the 3G's. Without the increase in volume, the app is just a toy to me.

Wi WiFi, iZotope, oh wi? I definitely share the enthusiasm of other reviewers for this highly functional drum machine app (after years of iZotope programs on my desktop, cool to see them on my iPhone!), and would like to sign the petitions for:- Custom time signatures!!! In 2008 4/4 is only the starting point in electronic beats. - Exporting performances as midi filesNoone's mentioned this, but I know I'm not alone in keeping WiFi disabled 99% of the time on my desktop, way too unsecure for my main puter (which is also my main iTunes puter). Disappointing/annoying to find that the PC plug-in to sync iDrum ringtones w/ iTunes _ONLY_ works w/ WiFi. Why? (Wi?) When there is a perfectly speedy USB cable connecting my phone to my PC as we speak.

Pretty Great Excellent and certainly worth the 5 bucks. The layout is functional and intuitive, and the ability to adjust the volume of each cell is awesome. My only quam with this and idrum club as well as I have them both, is the lack of more standard drum kit sounds on either program. It has nice potential for a musician like myself, I would like to see a few standard drum kits and precussion instruments, not just hip-hop and club kits. But even if you are only into hip-hop or the like, this is a quality product and deserves 5 stars.

MPC KILLER Pros: Beautiful GUI, MPC style tap rhythym programming, grid style rhythym programming. 16 sounds per pattern, 16 patterns per sequence. Simple point and drag patterns into a sequence with the tight and intuitive 16 bar cubic looper sequencer.Slick looking Pan and volume fader. @ $5.00 this app is a steal.Cons: Can not import/export midi or audio data from patterns or sequences, no (CLEAR) button for sounds in patterns or patterns in sequences.Believe it or not this app is an Akai MPC 500 and 1000 killer. 5star app with 3star app capabilities =(iZotope add import/export for midi/audio data and iDrum will become the MPC for a whole new Generation. =)

Would be awesome IF The latency and timing wouldnt be so rediculously off. I can't get it to sync with my DAW at all to record. It falls out of tempo so fast its rediculous. It's like a bad drummer. Other than that it's very fun to use and sounds great

Great mobile beat sketch pad! This app is more than meets the eye! It would be very easy to grasp for those new to Electronic Music Production and instantly intuitive to someone familiar with drum machines and step sequencers. I plan on using this app as a mobile musical sketch pad. When inspiration strikes, it will be there in my pocket ready for me. It's remarkable how quickly I can cook up a good beat with it. Although this app is really fun, it's definitely not just a toy.The ability to create ring tones is a great bonus. I've already loaded several cool new ringtones on my iPhone.I'm looking forward to the future ability to sync compositions with the desktop version of iDrum. At that point, this app will be a complete mobile tool for beat making.Now I just need a synth app with a piano roll sequencer!

Well worth the money this app is majorly addicting and really easy to pick up. once you get the hang of it you can't put it down. it's a must buy! only a few things are needed....
pitch control for the seperate sounds
ability to change the time signature
and for the drummers out there, we need triplets!!
Aside from those things, a great app worth the $5.

Like it. I really like this application, but it has some major flaws. One of these flaws is that you can't turn off/delete all of the smallest type of squares at once--it requires much manual work to blank out a whole 4x4 grid of said squares. There also is no way that I can see to start a blank kit, unless you have an already blank kit selected when you click the "new kit" button. Third, when you select a new sound for a medium square, it changes for all of the medium squares in that same location in the bigger squares throughout the kit.This limits freedom in the amount of sounds you use throughout the beat. There are quite a few more of these mainly aesthetic flaws in the program, and I think that the programmer should look through all of these and try to fix them, mostly because I payed five dollars for a program that isn't very easy to use.Sorry for my negative rant, but it was neccesary. I like the amazing selection of sounds, which are very diverse, and color-coded. The volume blance option is wicked cool, as is the recorder. Keep up the good work, and please consider some of my suggestions for a future update.
