Public Radio Tuner Music - iPhone Application 2 Stars

Negative reviewers are clueless  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
The negative reviewers don't have a clue what they are downloading, this is not for finding new POP music (as most negative reviewers are trying to do)! This is a "Public radio station" app, it is for public radio (mostly talk radio) and does what it is designed for very well (especially after the first update to save favorites), keep the updates coming. If you want to find music there are lots of apps for that. This is not designed to compete with Pandora. It is too bad this has ended up with two stars from all of the uneducated downloaders clueless of what they are downloading and having false expectations. - Version 1.1.1 - Feb 17, 2009 - Public Radio Tuner review by corwyn_95018
great idea but doesn't work well  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
love listening to NPR but the app frequently cuts out & loses the signal, stopping playback - Version 1.1.1 - Mar 3, 2009 - Public Radio Tuner review by MikeNewark
It's called Public Radio for a reason!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I never write reviews of Apps, in fact this is my first. However I feel obligated to counter the reviews this wonderful App is getting. You will get access to hundreds of public radio, jazz and even classical stations for all over the country. No other App even comes close to doing what this one can do in terms of giving access to diverse, educational and fulfilling programming. It's called CULTURE and unfortunately because some people can't listen to Justin Timberlake with this App, they think it's worthless. Well good, more bandwith for me! - Version 1.1.1 - Feb 17, 2009 - Public Radio Tuner review by NPR Rocks!
Great App, Period: A Radio DJ's Review  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I work in Radio, and honestly this app deserves 5 stars. It's being rated so low because people don't understand what NPR is. "Get some hip hop," "All they play is classical," "I hate all the talking." Come on people, really? This app works wonderfully, and I'm so glad it offers the local NPR stations, which is very cool. Clearchannel should take a few pointers from this app as far as functionality and stability goes. Their iHeartRadio app is almost painful to use with its constant buffering. That's Underdogs: 1, and Giant Evil Radio Conglomerate: 0. Thank you NPR. I love you even more now. P.S. Are you folks looking for any employees in say the Maine area? Haha. - Version 1.1.1 - Feb 20, 2009 - Public Radio Tuner review by Allennet
Road tested!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Driving between Atlanta and Florida, I pass by a lot of weak signal public radio station and I'm not a big fan of country + christian radio, so I used this app for my recent long trip and it worked perfectly. I was able to listen to listen to both local and out of town public radio stations. I also love the fact that you can bookmark your favorite stations. - Version 1.1.1 - Feb 18, 2009 - Public Radio Tuner review by VinLuv
Excellent Public Radio!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
It's highly unfortunate that people are giving this low reviews for things it isn't supposed to do. PUBLIC RADIO app, that's a specific thing! Regardless of the ignorance abundant here, I was amazed how many selections of public radio there were to chose from. Anyone who enjoys public radio can now do so anywhere with there iPhone. Considering the price (free!) this app is lovely, glad I got my hands on it - Version 1.1.1 - Feb 17, 2009 - Public Radio Tuner review by Snow Bored Now
Use AOL radio app instead...  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
incredibly unstable; interface crashes my iphone every time I use this app. when I'm actually able to get radio, it stops and buffers every 30 seconds. and this is for kcrw, the powerhouse of public radio, with commensurate bandwidth. by contrast, the AOL radio app streams kcrw pretty consistently and has better sound quality. sorry, American Public Media. I wanted to like your app better than the AOL/CBS one. - Version 1.1.1 - Mar 3, 2009 - Public Radio Tuner review by sb_012
Public Radio Isn't Commercial Radio  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Don't give this app a review of 1 star because you could only find public radio stations on an app that states it lets you listen to public radio. This app does exactly as it says and even works on the edge network. - Version 1.1.1 - Feb 18, 2009 - Public Radio Tuner review by Rhendal
People are stupid  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
The fact that this app has about a 2 star average rating is a great example of why open community reviewing is worse than wikipedia articles. Confused by the low scores this perfectly good app was getting, I started to read some of the 1 and 2 star reviews to realize that almost all of them were from users upset that their local hip-hop or top 40 station isn't on this app. To them I say this: YOU ARE MORONS. This is a PUBLIC RADIO streaming client. Your local top-40 station isn't a non-profit, public radio format station! Down-rating a public radio app because it only contains (you guessed it) PUBLIC RADIO STATIONS is the height of idiocy. Wish I could give a 100 star review to offset these dolts. - Public Radio Tuner review by Cheule
Great app for Public Radio listeners  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
If you're looking for rock, pop, hip-hop or rap stations, this is not the app for you (a ridiculous number of the low-rated complaints are for just that, which makes one wonder at those raters' English literacy level). However, if you want to have your Public Radio station's streaming audio available at finger's touch, this is a fantastic app. Stations from around the nation are available; a great way to listen to your favorite Public Radio station if far from home or hometown. All of my stations, local ones and the ones I grew up listening to, are here, as well as online-only feeds and some of the stations which produce national programs, like WHYY, home of "Fresh Air." Exploring the feeds from different stations is a great way to listen to the voices in parts of the country you've never been or haven't seen in a while. If the stream quality for a particular station is poor or if the station you want isn't available, contact that station and let them know. It's the stations which determine if they wish to participate in services like this. It could be that they didn't think the service worth their limited funds, or that they don't have the money to provide a better quality stream. Remember, they depend upon listeners' financial support! I wish that I could use other apps on my iPod and still have the audio stream, like when listening to iTunes. That's not a significant quibble, however, so it does not affect the high rating I'm giving this app. Warning: the sound starts at a very high level, so you'll want to reduce as quickly as possible before the stream loads, unless you want "Morning Edition" blasting at full volume first thing in the morning. - Public Radio Tuner review by ltsk
What a difference an update makes! This is a public radio listener's dream app.   Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Wow, everything I wanted them to fix in the previous version has been addressed in this latest release. You can now search local stations using GPS, station call letters, or search by state. Once you find a station, you can just click on the star icon to make it a favorite. Now you no longer have to browse through tons of stations just to find the five you regularly listen to, just click on favorites and there they are. Stations start playing right away after you pick them, no more having to click on the play icon after picking your station. This is the application I've been wanting for so long and it's finally here. Easily a five star application. - Public Radio Tuner review by roobieroo
What a great service.  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Version 1.1 turns this into a terrific app, adding favorites, location services, and a list organized by state. Just as public radio needs financial help, this app has pushed me back into the pledging camp. Maybe someday the iPhone SDK will let apps like this play in the background while you're doing other things (I'm not holding my breath). - Public Radio Tuner review by music empiricist
Great start! (revised for 1.1)  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Finally, one place to listen to NPR/PBS! Below are the suggestions I originally had for improvements, but most were addressed in this update, which is fantastic: Search functionality to find stations (added) Favorites list (added) background play; however, this is probably a limitation of the API In lieu of that, playing in sleep mode (now plays in sleep mode) In addition to the above, stations are organized by state and you can search for stations near you. - Public Radio Tuner review by Jägs
Love it!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
The first version of this was a bit pathetic, but the 1.1 update is great! It's very easy to find stations and the interface is very pretty. The favorite button is a great idea. Streaming works well, even over EDGE.The only thing that's missing is what the other NPR application is trying to do, but does it badly: random access to programs. Including that in this program would be excellent. Especially if it would include local programs, as well. - Public Radio Tuner review by ghoti
Finally!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I've been waiting for this app since the App Store first came out. I used the Stitcher app before and, while it's a fine app with it's own merits, what I really wanted - to listen to my local public radio stations - wasn't possible. Until now. I can't tell you how many times I've sat in my car after I got home from work, listing to my public radio station (which is OPB) for ten or twenty minutes before going inside because I didn't want to miss the conversation on the radio. Now I won't have to do that anymore! Suggestions for future updates: 1. Use radio ID information, like newer FM radios use, that display what's currently on. That would be especially helpful for music stations. 2. Allow bookmarking within a radio show. For instance, if I'm halfway through All Things Considered and I have to stop listening, I want to hit a button in the app that will tell me how far into the program I was so I can download the podcast later and pick up where I left off. Maybe that's a lot to ask so if it could just bookmark the current time, giving us an approximate idea of how far we were in the program, that would be swell. 3. Allow podcasts to be downloaded over the air within this app. That would be a great tie-in with my previous suggestion, and would be helpful for long-distance trips when the cell phone signal stops working. Thanks for reading, and for the great app! - Public Radio Tuner review by deanhatescoffee
Your station not available? Not the App's fault!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
The Public Radio Tuner is an opt-in service for public radio stations to stream their broadcast to the iPhone. The PRT can only stream a particular station to you iPhone if that station has agreed to it. If your favorite station isn't available on this app, it's because they've decided that they don't want to be a part of it. In some cases, stations don't have the equipment to stream thier signals, for some stations, paying for the bandwith associated with streaming costs just isn't financially viable, especially when millions of iPhone users become part of the equation. To me, that's a poor reason to rate this app lower than it deserves. Better to lobby your local station (or make a pledge) to join in the program. - Public Radio Tuner review by Anonymous PRT user
Sleep Problem Fixed - Great App  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
December 5th upgrade fixes the sleep problem that many reviewers complained about. With that, this is now a great app. If you are a public radio fan, this is the app for you. My only complaints are that although there are a great number of stations, there are many public radio stations missing. In addition, a "Favorites" or "Bookmarks" feature is needed. Also, stations are not listed consistently - some by call letters, some by frequency, and some by name, so it is hard to find something you are looking for. So, a "Search" feature would also be nice, along with a genre search (jazz, classical...). - Public Radio Tuner review by MI Arch

Can't Play if Can't Find  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I'd like to be more gracious about an early release of a free app, but if I can't find my station, how the radio sounds does not matter. Search and bookmarks are basic to iPod, but missing here, a problem with 500 stations listed in arbitrary order. The volume slider is too close to the Play/Pause button. It's easy to hit it by accident, so adjusting the volume inadvertently turns the music off. Audio streams frequently time out, a problem with Internet access in my remote rural area, but their not reconnecting automatically is a problem of unpolished software. Whenever the message appears saying, "The audio stream is unavailable; please connect again later," it is in fact invariably available by tapping Play. The software should manage this automatically. The superficially alphabetical list of 500 stations arbitrarily orders some stations by frequency ("89.7..."), some by call signal ("WXYZ..."), others by name ("The Current"), and yet others by abbreviation ("MPBN" for "Maine Public Broadcasting"). A database should properly allow the user to search for any known ephemera, but instead, the program offers only a single, too long scrollable list of this disarray. The Internet offers a unique opportunity for Public Radio to broadcast to remote areas with little radio reception, so this app is important. Their usual attention to detail applied to its programming would be a breath of Fresh Air. - Public Radio Tuner review by Bozocity
