NetNewsWire Premium - NewsGator Technologies, Inc.
NetNewsWire is an RSS reader for iPhone — you can read news from the millions of weblogs and sites that publish RSS feeds.
Because NetNewsWire syncs with Google Reader (Google account required) — and with NetNewsWire for Macintosh and FeedDemon for Windows by NewsGator — if you read an item on your iPhone, you don’t have to read it again your Macintosh or other computer. It’s automatically marked as read everywhere.
You can star items or send them to Instapaper to save them for later. You can email articles or post links to Twitter to share with friends.
Going through your articles is easy: just tap the Next Unread button.
And if there are feeds you don’t want to read on your iPhone, you can hide them.
The premium version of NetNewsWire is ad-free. 2005 NewsGator Technologies, Inc.

Google Reader broke the shackles   Back when NewsGator's own syncing framework was the only game in town, the combination of their decent desktop client and horrible iPhone client was a lock-in. But now that they've offloaded syncing to Google, this mediocre update to the iPhone client can be ignored. I've been using Newsstand lately (primarily because NewsGator is delivering this update nearly a month after it was promised), and it's vastly superior on every level -- intelligent interface, wonderful customizability and completely transparent syncing using Google Reader. There's simply no reason to purchase NetNewsWire. It's gone from lame to unusable -- and the preference panel is a joke. Literally the only option is to enter your login information -- no customizability whatsoever. Your two bucks are better spent elsewhere.

A formerly great app, but quite buggy with some bizarre interface changes   Many, many problems:- Can't sync properly. Changes made sometimes propagate to Google, sometimes don't. Those that do make it to Google never make it to the desktop client and vice versa.- Latest News doesn't sort articles by read/unread, and doesn't clear out read articles, so finding new ones is nearly impossible - defeating the entire purpose- Feeds don't update their read counts properly. I marked all as read in "Latest News", and none of the other article counts on the groups and feed updated.- Read feeds aren't hidden, making it very frustrating to find new updates and making the list of feeds unweildy and strangely fragmented. Some feeds have new items, some don't, and if you haven't gotten any updates yet, the feed won't show up at all. It makes no sense.- The main list interface is deeply flawed. On the one hand, it tries to show the last update to a feed and the date. A nice gesture, but when it only shows four words - and only from the first update at that, it's useless ("Apple, rapper Eminem... Today, 11:10 AM").- Stars don't sync to clippings/flags on the desktop. Star something on the iPhone, and it may as well be gone.- The lack of preferences is a noble goal, but taken to extremes here that make the product all but useless.- "Open in Browser" is in a submenu, yet it's the most commonly used button in an RSS reader (after "Mark All as Read"). What?In a nutshell:- Fix syncing, wherever the problem lies. Right now, this is a dealbreaker not having the same view on the iPhone as the desktop.- Remove read items from all lists - main feed list, Latest News, etc. If people want it that much, and others (like me) hate it that much - make it a preference.- Sort "Latest News" by unread. Or... make it a preference, much as I can sort how I please on the desktop.- Redesign the main feed list.Regarding the main feed list, I propose offering two modes: compact and detailed. Make it a preference.- Compact: only shows what is currently the first line - favicon, name, and number of unread. Fairly high density, optimized for large numbers of feeds. Similar to 1.x.- Detailed: shows a list of update titles beneath it, perhaps capped at 5 or 10 (but not 1!). Eliminate the dates when in portrait mode - there's just not enough space to show the title and date. That would allow for enough title to be useful, and show several (perhaps all) updates at once. The only downside is that list entries would be different heights, but then they would be useful.Let me say it again - add preferences. I admire an application with sensible enough design and defaults to not need preferences, but this has been taken to an unfortunate extreme.I have the deepest respect for Brent Simmons, but this update is much more difficult and irritating to use. Meanwhile, in any major rewrite there are bound to be bugs - and this is no exception. I'm used to finishing up reading things on the desktop, grabbing my iPhone, and being able to pick up where I left off immediately. Right now, no luck - no matter what I do, I can't get the iPhone to reflect read/unread status changes I make on the desktop. Perhaps there's a delay involved in Google Reader; whatever the case, the product doesn't work as well as it did in 1.x. Syncing is also glacially slow. Here's hoping 2.1 improves things, but we still have to wait for Apple's own glacial process to approve it. I wish I could go back to 1.x, as it was a vastly superior product.

Have to get used to again   I liked the previous version better but it's a good upgrade just wish that it had a way to turn auto-rotation off. I like reading in portrait mode, that was what made it my favorite RSS reader.

All that waiting for nothing   I've used NetNewsWire for Mac since you had to pay for it, and I still love it, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to look elsewhere now for an iPhone feed reader. While I was very excited about the move to Google syncing, I had always planned on staying with NNW-iPhone once the new version came out. Well, now that all the waiting (a month past when it was originally promised) is over, there hardly seem to be any worthwhile feature additions to be excited about. The addition of an add to Instapaper feature is huge for me, and I love it, but this feature can be invoked with the bookmarklet on the iPhone web interface of Google Reader. Other than that change, and some bug fixes (yes, it seems to run much more smoothly now, even with almost 100 feeds to load), nothing much seems to be different. The interface is marginally nicer looking, but not by much. I hurried to buy the premium version as soon as I saw that NNW 2.0 was available, but now I regret not trying out the free, ad-supported version first. I will most likely stay with the Google Reader web interface combined with NNW for desktop.

3 Stars But Expecting More/Better   I have been very loyal to Newsgator/NNW but this past couple of months have sorely tested that loyalty.
It was a big mistake to send out a notice to switch over to Google Reader because I did that right away and found that I became very comfortable with Google Reader in my browser. I got to like GR even more when they added the "sendto" feature which is fabulous. So all of a sudden I sort of lost interest in the NNW desktop client.
Then they did not hit any of the self-imposed deadlines and there was very little communication as to the problem. Some but not alot. I continued to wait for the NNW iPhone app because I do not like GR on Mobile Safari too much (if they add "sendto" to mobile I might like it more). About a week ago I finally gave up started trying different native iphone apps that synced to GR and settled on Newstand. Which gave me what I thought I would be getting from NNW iPhone
Today we get the NNW iPhone app - finally.
And so far it is a let down. I cannot believe that there is no way for me to hide read items. This app should not have been released without that feature. In testing it today I find that I have to go through EVERY item to find random sprinklings of items where the time stamps force them into a random distribution throughout the "24 Hours" items list. That makes the app almost useless to a power user like me. The whole point is to get a quick scan of what's new not going hunting for buried treasure.
The design is B-O-R-I-N-G. We were told that the app would look the private-label versions for outlets like All Things Digital. It does not.
Why on earth do I have to open an item before I can star it. The idea of starring an item would be to skim down a list of unread items (something which cannot be done) and cherry-pick stories I want to spend time reading more carefully (something else which cannot be done).
At this point you might figure I am not using the app but for three reasons I am sticking with it.
1. Sync to Google Reader is excellent. Very fast. This is the single most important thing to get right.
2. Items starred in iPhone are correctly synced and starred within Google.
3. The developer of this app has a great track record, I expect they will fix these issues. So, what is two bucks to give a vote of confidence to a guy who has given us a great free RSS app since the iPhone launched?
Make me look smart fellas!!

Looked OK   I started using this app. The more I used it the more I liked it. However after a while the app crashed and has not been able to start again.
The interface, while the app worked, looked great. You can star items but you cannot share items or read others' shared items. This would be worth including.
The first order issue is stability. I've restarted the iPhone, uninstalled and reinstalled the app, but the app now crashes on launch.
It was a great app while it was working. I'd love it to be working again. It has potential to be the best RSS and Google Reader app.

Pretty update but very unstable   The new update looked nice and updated with little problems. However, I was only able to play with it once or twice before it crashed, and continued to crash every time it started up. What use is this app if I can't read my content???? I'm going to check out newstand.

Awesome remake   I don't review much applications, I usually feel that the reviews on the store are very similar to my opinion. So I don't feel like I have much to offer.
That is not the case with this application. At time of writing it has 24 reviews and a average rating of 3.5 stars and I'm afraid it might get worse. So I have to speak up and defend whats going on.
-To new users-
This is a very affordable google reader client with a desktop client also availiable for Windows and Mac. It's all free (with the exception of the premium verison here) and very fobust and feature rich. Google reader is the most popular online feed reader by far and has a ton of features.
- to users of previous verisions -
With the exception of a new engine nothing has changed. Google reader has all of the features of netnewswires online service and more. After it's all set up it's going to be a breeze to use. Google reader has a ton of clients on the desktop and a few on the iPhone (this one being the best and most affordable ad free one). I can see why some people are confused about the change but the developers felt it was a good idea for multiple reasons (I'm not here to speak for them so just check out their website) also if your a fan of their applications after the set up nothing will change, with the exception that you can now use google readers awesome web interface. As with all major overhauls this one might not have a bunch of features but im sure they are comming. This application has been MUCH more stable on my iPod touch then byline and much faster to load and start up.
Not to mention they nailed the interface! It's easy on the eyes and very readable. (good work guys) the desktop clients ui has not changed but like they said 4.0 is being worked on and I'm sure that it will have a spectactular user interface.
I'm very pleased with the application and love performance. To people having problems try restating after installing it. It might be a low memory on your iPhone or iPod touch.
Great work guys! I love it's now my primary reader.

Great update!!!! Worth price   I loved the old app. It was fast and simple. This update improves the interface and is slightly faster. Adds horizontal viewing of text. I think it's perfect now but would be nice if you could download articles for offline viewing.

Decent RSS reader   The good - very nice layout changes from v1. Still a nice simple layout. The sync to Google reader is very quick. When you star an article on the phone it comes up quick on GR.
The bad - The dropped support from NewsGator is lame. And after following instructions there was no importing of my NewsGator subscriptions to Google or the Mac version of NetNewsWire (and ultimately the phone). This just didnt work. You'd figure they'd have worked this out before bailing on us! I basically just resubscribed to all of my feeds within Google.
Wish list - the ability to add feeds within the app would be nice. Posting to Facebook would be too.

At last a faster syncing google reader   I had been waiting for this to come out as I use NNW on my Mac. I tried newstand an with over 1000 feeds it way too slow to be of any use as it took to long to view feeds. This update let me read the feeds with out locking up or crashing which newstands big problem.
The bug I had was if viewing a web page when you went back to the feed the return to the main feed list button would be missing. Had to exit and restart to get the app working again.
This happened with the last version.
I am happy with the update an if the one bug can be fixed it would be 5 stars for me. I want speed and syncing back to the desktop.

Go back to Version 1   I have spent the whole morning with version 2 and have to say that when I get home I am downgrading to 1 tonight. The new layout is cluttered and less responsive. Also, when you click on a headline the whole story does not appear, you have to click again. To top it off, the icon is juvenile.

Hype and not much more   Bad interface, does not follow AppStore links, no image cache, ....., the list goes on.
Many other options out there, Byline, RSS Flash g, Doppler, Gazzate, newsstand which do so much more then this.
Maybe with updates could be good, now look elsewhere.

Loving it, except...   I love the app, but the 2 main problems I have are, first, the lack of an unread count badge on the icon on the home screen, that is a feature I loved in the last version that inexplicably disappeared in this version, second, is the fact that you can't decide how long read items are kept, I don't like having to sift through the read to find the unread, so basically if they had the new look and features with the old prefrence panel and badge count, this app would be PERFECT for me. Hopefully they won't ignore the problems this rendition of the app has and update based on the complaints here.

This whole platform is a mess run away   Many of us who are stuck with the newsgator platform are getting ripped apart by the lack of serious development and support form Newsgator. TRhe new iphone update doesn't let you STAR items that sync to anything, but it does let you save to instapaper or e-mail. Just f*&%king great. And their patheic support is appalling with month old announcements about Sept 10(!) deadlines with no real info and confusing instructions about having to sync via Google Reader. What's the point?RUN AWAY FROM THIS PLATFORM AS FAST AS YOU CAN
