Private Notes uses your own password to generate the cipher key to dynamically encrypt your notes using the Blowfish algorithm. Furthermore, your password is encrypted with the one-way-only MD5 algorithm and securely stored on your iPhone. This approach is a much better way to protect your data than using a generic and hard-coded key, or store your password and your data unencrypted as in other applications. Our approach prevents hackers from retrieving the password or the key in your device and in turn accessing your private data.

To import a note into Private Notes is easy. Use any email client that supports rich formatting or URL editing, e.g., gmail, yahoo, hotmail, mail on mac. Add a URL link in the following format: privatenotes://your note here. Receive your email with Mail.app on your iPhone, and click the link. The note will be imported into Private Notes immediately. No need to install desktop software on different platforms and worry about connections between devices. Check out our website to get more information.
When you run Private Notes for the first time on your iPhone or iPod Touch, your will be prompted to set up a password. Please keep the password safe, because it is the only way the application identifies you for log on and generating the key to decrypt your data.
While changing your password, Private Notes will decrypt your data with your old password before encrypting it with your new password. Please do NOT interrupt this process. Otherwise a data lost may occur.
Remember to click on the "Save" button after you finish editing a note. Private Notes will only encrypt your data and save it into the database when you instruct the application to do so.
If encrypted data has been altered without authorization, or the database is damaged, Private Notes will display a message: "Corrupted Data!".
When upgrading, DO NOT delete the old version of Private Notes on your device, as this will erase any data you may have saved before. Simply install the update over the existing installation.

Private Notes is Flawed I bought Private Notes because I wanted an app that I could securely store notes such as a list of my current medications, abbreviated medical history, some passwords, and security codes. There were two attractions that put this app on top of my list. One, it encrypted the password with MD5 (128 bit encryption) and two, it provided a way to transfer data from computer to iPhone/iPod. The comparatively high price wasn't a deterrent, and in fact it suggested quality over the free competitors.At first it appeared to perform as expected and as advertised. The interface is straight forward, though detailed instructions are not offered. You have to play. The show stopper turned out to be the feature of importing notes. The instructions, when I purchased the app, consisted of a paragraph that seemed simple enough until I tried it. Turns out I didn't know how to add a URL link in my email. I use Apple Mail and I just paste a URL into it. I emailed them, explained my problem, and to their credit, they added a step by step procedure to their web site.I tried it and it didn't work. I sent another email describing my problem. They explained what was happening and added an additional procedure using Apple Mail and recommended its use over gmail, the original example. I followed that example exactly with absolutely no success. Apple Mail would not recognize privatenotes://xxxxxx as a valid URL.They wrote back that they didn't understand what my problem was because they couldn't duplicate my problem. I'm using Version 3.5 (930.3) and so are they. They insisted it worked and could not help me. In frustration I contacted a friend that makes his living in network support for a large corporation. He has the same computer I do and the same version of Apple Mail. He had the same results as I did. Here is what he said:("I tried this and it doesn't work unless you use predefined url prefixes. I see that http, https, and ftp work, but not privatenotes://. I'd be leery of this idea anyway. eMail isn't secure by any means, so their name "privatenotes" is misleading. Don't use this tool.") I gave Triple Creeks a week to resolve this issue before I wrote this review. I've received nothing so here is my review and my recommendation.The importing of notes does not work for me and apparently it is not secure anyway. Don't buy this program if you expect to import information from your computer. You can edit and add categories for your notes. Unfiled is fixed but Business and Personal can be changed and others can be added. You have to poke around to find out how, but the feature is available. I wasn't able to sort the notes in each category, automatically or manually. Maybe there is an undocumented way. There is a search feature at the top of the window; maybe that substitutes for sorting. I gave it one star because it isn't ready for publication. In one of my emails I suggested they distribute it free until the bugs are gone. They said "Free trial won't be available under the current App Store structure." If your satisfied with a program that encrypts the password preventing access to all notes, Private Notes does the job.

Useful if you have sensitive info on your phone If you are looking for a stronger-than-average encryption application, this is the option. I have the $10 SplashID which uses blowfish and has desktop sync capability which is convenient. But SplashID doesn’t offer the flexibility to take a note though it offers plenty of bank account templates, and it seems SplashID doesn't apply user generated key to encrypt like this app does. Other features of this app are just average. Still, this app can be useful if you have sensitive information on your phone. Well, email can be safe if you configure it right. I personally found the email import feature is convenient - I only installed SplashID desktop at home and don’t want to install desktop app on every computer I use - it actually increases the risks.

Good Security, Poor Features The security seems to be one of the better programs. I hope that Triple Creek adds more features in future releases including: The ability to sort, The ability to sync with your PC so you can type all the entries on your PC and sync to the iPhone completely formatted (not through the current clunky eMail method which does not format).

Solid but a few fixable flaws This app does what it says: encrypts well. It auto-date-stamps and has categories. The BIG flaw that I run into every now and again is: IF YOUR PHONE RINGS WHILE YOU ARE WRITING AN ENTRY, YOU LOSE YOUR WORK. This isn't a big deal for some quick notes but when I've been writing for 20 minutes, it's very annoying. Doing airplane mode every time I write a note is silly. A configurable periodic autosave like their other product, iDiary would go a long way to fixing this. Or, an autosave at phone ring - how about it guys??!!
I would also like the ability to sort by title but that's not huge.
One huge plus is that Triple Creeks Support has been quite responsive to users in the past. They fixed some early flaws of their Secure Notes app and gave users a free upgrade to PNotes, way more stable and with better features. So there is hope regarding the flaws I mentioned.
