Feature Rich App but Laggy GPS   Not that I am all about comparisons but hopefully the below is helpful between Navigon and TT.Load Time: Very similar. TT may be slightly faster but negligible.Initial GPS Acquisition: Both were pretty good, acquiring a signal very fast. Slight edge to TT here cause once it acquired it never lost the signal. Navigon did briefly once or twice but both are strongInterface: Navigon has a simple interface. I found entering an address easy. I found adding favorites to be easier on the Navigon, less clicks. TT has a much more robust interface. Both let you plan future routes and add multiple route points but TT's implementation of this is better. TT also has more menu options from the home screen. Advantage TT.Routing Interface: Navigon clearly had a nicer interface with Lane assist and reality view being very cool and helpful. The turn arrows on the Navigon are more helpful. The TT though is more compact having all data in the bottom bar. Its cleaner whereas Navigon's is nice but slightly more chaotic. TT also lets you change the colors for day and night but i do not find this very helpful. HOWEVER, the street name displays for Navigon are not great. Not nearly as bad as everyone says but TT's are easier to read. Routing Accuracy: Well, here is where i saw a difference that i didnt expect to see. Navigon was VERY accurate as far as identifying where I was on the map relative to where i actually was - when i was passing High street it was timed perfectly on the Navigon. When I made a turn, it had me doing so smoothly on the Navigon. However, with TT there is a clear lag. I tried a few different routes, reset the phone, but still same result. While the lag is not terrible its noticeable and really takes away from what otherwise is a great app. I will keep testing but this is major shortfall in my opinion. Both apps got me where i needed to go using the same routes. I have not been able to test TT's IQ routes yet but this also seems like a nice differentiator if it works well.Routing Options: Here TT is the clear winner. TT has a VERY useful feature that allows you to identify a destination or starting point by clicking on it on the map (a magnifying glass pops up so you can get it exact). I am in up-State PA and alot of the areas we are visiting do not have addresses. This makes finding them and routing to and form the very easy. Entering addresses is very easy and I liked it better than the Navigon. Both use the apple keyboard so it is well integrated. Both allow you to avoid highways, ferrys, toll roads, HOV lanes, etc. Navigon does have a speed limit feature which can warn you with audible and visual cues. I think TT may have this as well but it works better on Navigon. But TT also has extensive other options like Find Alternative (if your not happy with your route, you can choose Avoid Roadblocks (and then choose which you want to avoid), Avoid Part of Route (very very cool. If you know part of your route before you start or while you've started is problematic, you can choose this option and then pick which part of the directions you want to avoid - it will reroute you from there), Route Demo (both have this but TT's is better), Instructions (This is a detailed list of the route which I am not sure why Navigon does not have but its very useful to see the overview). Hands down the TT routing options are superior. POI databases: On Navigon, it is extensive but the search is finicky. Sometimes you have to really narrow down the location for the POI to show. I found TT's more extensive and less finicky but still not great. I really like the icon view for POI's on Navigon. Overall a tie. Recalculation: Both do a good job of quickly recalculating you. Navigon's seemed slightly faster.TTS: Both do not have.Voice: TT gives you many options for the GPS voice. While its cool, they are not that different and Navigons is very pleasant. Both are loud although TT's is easier to adjust - simply by click on the left bottom of the screen while driving. Navigons you have to go into the menu and the adjustment is small.Phone integration: Work exactly the same way. Phone call comes in, you can answer and talk. You can then, while still on the call, go back into the app and it picks up from where it left off. Navigon does so more quickly. Both also work while on the ipod. TT's cuts out completely whereas Navigon is more like a fade out so you can hear the directions.Battery: Too hard to tell which was better. But both eat battery.Reality View/Lane Assist: As mentioned, Navigon has this and its a real nice feature. TT does not have this. Overall, i liked the Navigon interface better but the TT route option planning better. TT has many more useful routing options and features that Navigon just does not have. While the Navigon interface is "prettier" i found the TT interface less chaotic and more of the screen is used for the maps (albeit a small amount). But the lane assist/reality view makes the Navigon overall superior. Frankly, had the TT GPS actually worked as good as the Navigon, i think it would be a superior app. But it is not and therefore I would probably find myself using the Navigon more unless i need to do some more complex routing. There is no clear winner and it will depend on what you value more. It will be interesting to see who adds more features more quickly and if there is a cost to either to update the maps.

They rushed this out - Big holes, NJ is a country   Besides all the other reviews out there (I will not repeat their issues) They better fix this quick!1. Apparently, New Jersey is a country. States are listed as countries - totally bogus, can't search for an address without changing countries? What?2. Addresses in my address book on my iPhone DO NOT WORK. A totally correct and legal address in NJ leads me to upstate New York somewhere. Very bad.3. Before picking an address from my address book, I have to pick the correct country (state), in order for it to be correct. Shockingly bad.I am a stand alone TomTom 700 user and this product is not yet on par with a regular TomTom gps dedicated unit. Please fix it.

for $99 it should be much better.   Pros:* It's fast, routing and recalc of routes is quick and accurate.* User interface is simple and easy to use.* App is organized well, things are where you expect them. Cons: * No spoken streets? UNACCEPTABLE! * Does not tell you if destination is on your right or left side... SAD!* Zoom out of the map does not stick... it wanders back to the zoom level it wants to display... If I zoom out... stay there! * Can't drag the map while in route to look ahead etc. (this is due to if you touch the map, it goes back to the menu.. ??? WHY? ) Ahem, dble tap anyone? GEEEZ!* Map has zoom + and - buttons instead of pinch like 99% of all other apps. Again WHY? If you miss either button by a tiny amount your dumped into the menu... this really stinks.* Can't change display brightness within the app.The Browse map is GREAT! has all the detail you would expect (POI's Street names etc.) and you can pan around etc.The map shown while you are on a route is dismal! Why are these two different? If Tom Tom would use the same display they use for browseing a map at route time it would be Great! My three biggest complaints!!!1. No Zoom that will stay.2. Can't drag map while routing. (can't touch the map) this is possibly the dumbest thing I have ever seen in a GPS.3. No spoken street names!!!SAD SAD SAD! I want to know Tom Toms list of features to fixchange... and if these are not planned... I want my money back!! and for $99.00 I am deadly serious. Please FIX!

Mildly disappointed...   I'm rating this three stars based on initial tests. It's a little stuttery, the routes calculated so far are sometimes wacky requiring some tweaking and some addresses in my addressbook come up unnavigatable. We'll see how it does over the next few days. The voices are excellent. Looking forward to the car kit.

Crashes when trying to use contacts for addresses   When I go to contacts to get an address - it crashes. Or it says it does not understand the address and asks if I want to enter it manually. The maps do not appear updated - the Right Aid 1/2 mile away is not located. I purchased this first thing this morning. Disappointed. Hopefully they will fix it - I pad $99 for it. Back to Navigon until they work out the kinks.

good app, battery hog, needs better iPhone integration   The overall app is very nice and works well as a turn-by-turn GPS. There are a few things that need improvement in the next release:1. BATTERY LIFE: It seems to drain my iPhone 3gs battery very quickly. I spent 15 minutes with it during the pre-planning phase of a trip I'm taking and it drained 25% of my battery. Since I'll be in the car and plugged in most of the time I'm using the app I don't think it will be much of an issue, but this was a good example of where it matters.2. BASIC IPHONE INTEGRATION: Destinations can be entered using the iPhone's address book which is nice, but you cannot add TomTom destinations into the address book. Also, the POI (points of interest) functionality was a bit lacking. With all of the information the app has about POI it would be great if I could just browse a particular category without having to plan a new route. Clicking on a POI offers a phone number but no web address or scalable map - this is a huge shortcoming! What I ended up doing was finding a POI in TomTom, then leaving the app and typing it into the built-in GoogleMaps app in order to get a web address and street view. There is no support for copy and paste of TomTom destinations that I can find, so this process is very cumbersome and counter-intuitive. Also - pasting a full address (number, city, state, zip) into the address bar only confuses the TomTom. It wants me to enter a city only, then a street, then a house number. I just want to paste a full address. For $100 I do not want to leave this app for other apps, including the more functional (and free) "AroundMe" app, when I know all the POI and map information is already in there. Give me a better interface to access that information, please.3. FEATURE REQUEST: I would love to be able to plan a single trip with multiple destinations and save it (like the one about to take). I seem to be limited to one destination at a time.Take care of these shortcomings and it gets 5 stars from me. Right now it's a good turn-by-turn GPS with a lot of unrealized potential.

Disappointing   Wait for TomTom to update this before buying it -- you will be disappointed.- Does no speak street names- Does not tell you if your destination is on the right or left- POIs are out of date- POI database is lacking, anyway. It's not very rich.- Missing many of the stand alone TomTom featuresAlso, I had expected this thing for $99 to have traffic integrated into it. I mean, it IS connected to the AT&T network and it would only need to poll traffic every so often. Not so, sigh. The IQ routing seems to work fine, though, that's about the only thing I find interesting in this version of the app.Oh and one more thing - The US version of the app calls itself just "US - Canada 1.0.ipa" with no TomTom in the filename. This means spotlight can't find it for me.

No GPS Signal   This app seem nice, but what good is it if I can't get a GPS signal. I live in D.C. and for some reason, it won't get a GPS signal. I get a signal with Google Map and G-Map US East, but not with this app. Called TomTom customer and they suggested to reset my Iphone, I did. If that didn't work, purchase the car kit when it comes out. If I knew I needed to purchase the car kit, I wouldn't have purchased this app. I am hoping I am not the only one have GPS signal problems with this app. $99 is a lot for a program that doesn't work correctly.

Dated database, crashes and other problems. Wait for 1.1 version.   I had high expectations on downloading this App after the build-up at WWDC. On entering my home address in the "settings" section, the App crashed. I tried to enter my office address, but the street name (in existence for 9 years) was not in the database. Navigation systems in 2 of my cars, dating to 2003, include my office address in their DBs. When entering an address, the App asks for "country" but the selections are US states. Clearly, this App was rushed to market in the US. I expect TomTom to update this unpolished App shortly with add features (such as speaking the street name instead of "turn right") and bug fixes.

Setting destinations is unintuitive, tedious, annoying, and dangerous while driving.   I give two-star ratings when I feel an app is unusable and heading in the wrong direction.I find this app, and TomTom nav devices in general, simply too dangerous to use. To be sure, I love the idea of socially networked route finding, 3-D views, traffic, and custom voices. That's why I switched from Garmin to TomTom. But TomTom's usability needs a sharp improvement, and unfortunately they don't seem to be doing it.The good- The whole database lives on the phone, so navigating a route in Canada won't cost you $500 in AT&T data charges (Yes, this has happened to me).The Bad- Setting destinations while driving is dangerous: it's unintuitive, takes too many clicks, and is often unsuccessful. For example: To find Silmar Electronics in Jacksonville, Florida on the iPhone Map app is simple: just type Silmar, the pin sticks onto the map, click it and choose get directions to here. Easy. Very easy. Not with TomTom: I had to choose 'nav to poi'; select the state from a list, then type the city; search for the category of poi (is it electronics, or security? TomTom doesn't have either). So now I have to know the address. I thought about copying the address from the iPhone map app and pasting it into TomTom and trying again, but I'd already driven 5 or 6 miles just trying to set the destination and was worried about my safety. Test over. There are other usability issues with the app but this one deal breaker because it makes the app overly dangerous for me to use while driving.Again, I love the idea, and somebody will get it right. And if TomTom makes their nav products easier to use, I'll come back. But for now I can't recommend it. TomTom, please consider this a request for a refund.Mark Smith

better gps accuracy   First: folks, I like TomTom, but if you're going to spend $100 on an app, do some research! And if you're mad or disappointed with an app, at least try to provide some information that is useful; we don't really need to know your feelings. Gave the 1.1 update a 200 mile tryout this morning, and the accuracy is definitely less laggy. But it is still not perfect, just like all the other navigation apps on the iphone, because of the iPhone's limited aGPS chip. Also, beware that one of the effects of a not-so-accurate gps chip is inconsistent behavior; time of day, placement in the car, direction, type of car, and more can all make a difference. This means that all the anecdotal evidence in many of the reviews ("I got lost using it this afternoon"; "works great for me!") does not really tell you much about how it will perform over time for you. Reports from Europe, where the car kit is already available, suggest that the gps accuracy issue is really eliminated by the car kit. I like this better than Navigon because TomTom has some better routing functions and because TomTom's screen, while less pretty, is more readable in a single glance while driving. The differences in accuracy seemed subtle to me, and TomTom may have fixed the situation with this update. I don't need Text-to-Speech, but some people really want it. The contacts search routine seems to work more effectively, though I haven't given it a thorough workout yet. So, in sum, TomTom works fine for most people, it's imperfect, and it's ten dollars more than the closest competition. 1.1 is a modest but needed improvement. Let's hope for more. And choose wisely.

Dissapointing but maybe room for progress   For turn by turn, it's great. There are a lot of glitches when I was testing it out walking around, but in the car it works like it's supposed to. Apparently walking 2 miles in hour will not make the program registar direction. I was walking backwards for about a couple blocks. Another dissapointing thing was it does not say street names!!! I almost want to get my money back but I am hoping they will update it in the near future.

Looks and feels like home, but doesnt want to know us old timers   The app looks and acts like my windows mobile app with the exceptions noted in the other reviews. The most noted disappointment for me is that I dont see any way to tie to my existing account to use the voices I bought, the POIs I downloaded. How will I find my Dunkin Donuts as I drive by?Tie me to my account, give me back my features, and oh, can you get the mount on the market? Ill give you five stars then.

Pretty darn good!   I just got the TomTom app, and so far, it's pretty good... 4 stars. I had the following issues:1) For "whatever" reason, I had no sound-- only rebooting my phone fixed this. (Though my "ringer" worked, no app sound). This may be related to some other app. causing some problem, I don't know. But if you don't have audio, hard-reset your phone.2) I put in my home address, and the street name is one word, but it INITALLY only found the same street as two words: Ie. SouthPark vs. South Park... It then would only allow me to enter a cross-street (which existed and it was "close")... LATER, and I can't explain why, I was able to enter the one word "SouthPark", and it allowed for an address... now both street names show up when I start typing part of the name in. A bit strange.3) When I exited the app with a route in-progress, then started the app back up, the routing was "confused" and wanted me to turn around (to go where, I don't know!) for about 1/4 of a mile... it eventually corrected itself, but it seems like it wanted me to go back to the LAST previous turn onto the street I was on.Honestly though, they ALL have alittle "issues"... I've not tried the POI's yet, but it pretty much can't be worse than the other's I've tried... there's no street-name voice calls outs "Turn left on Main Street in 1/2 mile"... I'm HOPING that'll be coming soon. The navigate to a spot on the map is EXCELLENT... and the load-time is AWESOME-- it starts faster than any other GPS app I've tried. (As in, just a few seconds to load!!)All in all, 4-4.5 starts...

My indepth review of TomTom   My full review of the TomTom US / Canada applicationI used the app in familiar territory so I could best descern its accuracy. On a 17 mile drive to my work it was flawless, kept my position precisely without jumping or losing me. I purposely changed routes to see how fast it would recalculate and it did it in under 5 seconds most times. Faster than my built in GPS in my car! It had most POI that I would think it would have in the areas I was in, and was pretty accurate. Some places I noticed were actually closed and shut down, but then thats the economy so doubtful the POI database could keep up with that. The speedometer on it was surprisingly accurate! I liked the fact that if you went over the posted speed limit the function would turn red. Made me check my speed a couple of times. During my trip it never once lost GPS signal (3GS) and I purposely shut the app down (leaving the locations services on), checked email, did a few other things, relaunched the app, and it instantly got a GPS lock again and continued on the route it was on before. Nice. The volume is good. I have a noisy car with modified exhaust and I could still hear the announcements, although I did have to pay attention. If you have a quiet car you wont have any issues at all with it. The mounting kit will include a speakerphone and my guess is make it even louder, or who knows, in 3.1 perhaps we can use bluetooth to connect it to our stereos and have it come through our car speakers. That would be nice.Power consumption. Well here's a pitfall, but not an app killer. I drove 7 miles on battery power alone and consumed 11%. I went from 100% to 89% in a short period of time. We all know the GPS takes a lot of power, no worries there, so I plugged it in. Heres the interesting thing. With it plugged in, during the rest of the 12 mile trip, I actually LOST battery power! I went from 89% to 85%. No big deal, but the thing is it was plugged in, so its using more power then charging it is giving back!! Thats surprising and not good for long trips because even though it will take a long time, the iPhone will eventually run out of juice. But we're talking hundred miles or more I would think. The phone got hot, we know about that too. Not overheating, but hot. I was surprised at how well this functioned, I really was. I hadnt expected the GPS to be this good. I bought it because, while I have a built in NAV in my one car, our other car doesnt have one. So it will easily suffice to get us around. Its missing TTS, ie: speaking road names, but who knows. That could be an update, but even if its not the directions are still clear and precise. Pros: Good GPS tracking, decent POI, speedlimit display is accurate and useful, volume is decent, good map options, easy switch from portrait to landscape, the display is laid out well.Cons: Battery would be useless on long trips, and even plugged in it still loses juice. NOt a huge issue for trips under say, 50 miles. No TTS, but again, the directions are clear enough and you can see the street name right on the display. Perhaps in a future update, who knows.

Good first effort   I'm a long-time user of TomTom GPS. This is a good first implementation. I look forward to future updates. As others have stated, this first implementation isn't quite a match for TomTom's own hardware GPS devices; it seems like the programmers' intention on this was to produce a very nice, very functional UI (which they have), but at the cost of neglecting some of the features I have come to rely on. Here's what I've noted.- Good UI - larger than normal icons means you can see, understand, and operate the unit at arm's length; and the menus are designed well into categories and quite usable. But: there's no way to customize (yet) - I don't need "Mute Sound" or "2D Map", which I never use, on the front page of controls. One nit: when you enter a cascading menu, then back up, the screen you return to is always scrolled to the top, which is confusing when trying to navigate the menus. It should be at the same scroll point as when the cascading menu was entered.- "Contacts" are integrated, but not quite cleanly enough. Every time I'm told "The address given for this contact can't be understood", and I have to help it out. The program should understand that "South 107th Street" is the same as "S 107th St", it shouldn't confuse "Springfield IL" with "Springfield AR" if both city and state are given, and, if nothing else matches, it should be able to derive city and state from the zip code. A nit here: contacts without an address should not be selectable in the Contacts list.- No volume control. My TomTom hardware GPS has a volume slider, plus an option to scale the volume based on vehicle speed (to compensate for road noise); both features are useful. The application offers neither; it seems to use the side volume buttons to control its volume, if a voice happens to be speaking at the time, but you can easily find yourself adjusting your ringer volume instead.- No synthesized voices, no street names read aloud. I rely on this feature in my TomTom hardware device; even though the pronunciations are often comical, they're very helpful and keep me from having to read text on the device to figure out which street I'm turning on. I'd like to see it in the iPhone version as well.- No personal "Points of Interest". "Favorites" are provided, but I've accumulated quite a mass of places on my hardware device, and expect to do so on my iPhone as well. I'd like to see personal POIs returned to the program.- No synchronization. I've got a few hundred personal POIs attached to "TomTom Home", but no way to get them to the device. The iPhone should appear in TomTom Home and allow the same operations and management that is allowed for hardware devices. (Yes, this could be tricky; but some way to do the equivalent should be provided.)- No advanced services (like real-time traffic or user-provided map corrections) yet. These should be a natural feature for the iPhone, the first TomTom-style GPS device to have a built-in Internet connection; but nothing is implemented yet.- Poor graphics when browsing maps. Though the normal map display is smoothly updated (i.e. double-buffered), the browsing display seems to clear and redraw everything (i.e. single-buffered), making the experience seem jerky rather than smooth. This should be an easy bug to fix.All that said, the application is quite usable as it is, and I look forward eagerly to future updates.

Best GPS App To Date   I have been using Navigon since it came out, but I just got the TOM TOM App this morning. So far, I think it blows Navigon out of the water. Firstly, it actually has my street. I live in an extremely new neighborhood. Just me and two other people are moved in. Navigon didn't have it. Of course, that's just the difference between Navteq and TeleAtlas map data. Google Maps also uses TeleAtlas. It sure seems to be the superior choice, at least in Nashville, TN anyway. Some people were complaining about the UI. Really? To me, it is WAY easier to get what you want than Navigon. Count me as a satisfied TOM TOM customer.
