The best yet!   This is absolutely the best relaxation app in the store. It takes up less space than most apps of this type because you download only the sounds you want. It's very easy to use and the sound quality is excellent. I have most of the relaxation apps already (White Noise, aSleep, A Sound Sleep, iChillout, Relax, Easy Relax, iMoods, iDream, Serenity...). None of these even compare to this new version of Ambiance. They all seem so 1970's now. Wait, I don't think I had my iPhone in 1970. I don't think cell phones had been invented yet! I don't think I had been invented yet! I don't think computers were invented yet! Well, at least not desktop computers. Maybe a really slow computer that was bigger than my house. If I had a house. I rent a studio. But it's on the beach. So don't cry for me. Anyways, where were we? Oh yeah, excellent app. Highly recommended.

The "new" Ambiance: Wow!   The new, upgraded version of Ambiance is a killer app, by any definition of that term. Ambiance is now the very first application I will show my colleagues and friends when they inquire about my iPod Touch. For a mere $2.99, you have access to looping ambient sounds of every type and description, and you may download as many or as few as you like for no additional charge. There is simply no other product available in any hardware or software format that offers features even reasonably comparable to the new Ambience, regardless of the price. A decent noise machine may offer a dozen electronically synthesized sounds at a price close to $100. Even a simple CD of nature sounds will cost you between $7 and $10.There has been some discussion about the new terms of use. I don't understand the reluctance to give out an e-mail address, especially in cases such as this. If you're concerned about spam, get a decent e-mail program or browser that includes multiple filtering options, or run the e-mail program you have behind a firewall (or multiple firewalls if you choose). If you're concerned about identity theft, you should employ a combination of multiple e-mail accounts and firewall options, and be sure to conduct your most sensitive business only within your most secure account. In this case, you've already provided an e-mail address to Apple in order to log in to iTunes, which is what gives you access to Ambiance and other apps in the first place. Beyond that, the creator of this app has explained why he's chosen to require an e-mail address in order to use this app, and I've chosen to take him at his word (which happens to come in the form of a legally binding contract). Purchase of any copyrighted material (such as Ambiance) does not carry with it any implication of ownership on the part of the user. You have simply purchased a license to use it, on whatever terms are set forth by the creator of that material. And furthermore, threats to involve Apple in action against the developer are unwarranted and irresponsible. If you don't like this product or its terms of use, you're quite free to use another competing product, or, for that matter, develop your own.As to the price issue, the upgrade from the previous version was absolutely free, so given that the developer of this app is not asking for more of my money, I'm at a loss to understand how a free upgrade with substantial enhancements could be termed a case of "bait and switch." Yes, I enjoyed the previous version of Ambience and used it regularly in the office and at home. But thanks to the many new options and seemingly endless opportunities for customization, I'm certain I'll use the new version even more often and with greater enjoyment, and I recommend it enthusiastically.

Outstanding.   Definitely worth more than a measly dollar, this app has been great.Eagerly waiting for the next version. I want to see this app retain settings between uses but otherwise it's just plain excellent.*** Update: Just noticed negative version 2 reviews: I don't get it.The new version is leaner, has a great user interface (a MUCH better UI then the last version had), makes managing sounds easier, and is simple to use. Getting new sounds with this version is a snap and doesn't require a 20 mb+ download to get them. Just find a new one you'd like, which are user rated (quite cool) and then download it over 3G or wifi (haven't tried Edge). The interface looks great with controls that are logical and attractive, and with version 2 it's much easier than before to find the sounds I like most. Like most apps Ambiance just has improved with updates, but version 2 has completely remade it for the better. I really liked the last version but with all the improvements here I'll definitely use it more. Version 2 is just plan better in every way than version 1.x.

Great Upgrade   Ambiance plays clips or loops of sounds from aurally interesting (and often relaxing) settings. You can listen to a thunderstorm, waves, bird songs, and much more. The new version sports an improved interface, plus the ability to download sounds that you want from the Ambiance site. This means that the size of the app download is smaller, because it doesn't need to include the 50MB of available sounds with the app. For those of us with packed iPods or iPhones, this is a blessing. For those that don't want to bother with downloading, it's an inconvenience. So, the developer has made available Ambiance Classic for anyone that wants it with a past license. The new sound download site makes it possible to update Ambiance's sound content easily, and perhaps we will see user submitted sound loops.I also want to give perks to the developer for being both responsive to my customer emails and his willingness to improve the app. He also took the time to respond to concerns posted in the comments of a TUAW article on Ambiance's updates.

My most used app   I got more than my 99 pennies worth from my first use -- running the "wind" noise (complete with occasional quiet rustling of leaves) through my headphones while working on a paper for more than two hours -- it kept me meditatively focused on my task (and I am one to be easily distracted). Some other observations... 1. The stereo sound (with headphones) is incredibly rich and soothing with the crickets, wind, birds, creek, and especially rain and waves. 2. The timer is accessible throught the "i" button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen (maybe the developer could make a more obvious button to push to get to it). 3. The blue noise, white noise, and violet noise are all a bit too tinny and annoying, but the pink noise has depth and bass to it (maybe get rid of the previous three and rename pink noise to Niagara or Niagara Falls). 4. I have the creek sound running just out of the iphones speaker and it has visitors actually looking for or asking where my soothing water fountain is.Great app... I use this one the most (even more than my beloved Pandora) and I have over 30 apps. - Ambiance review by SparkleMirror
Great way to focus!   I always work at coffee shops and libraries, but they're never as quiet as I hope. 99 cents is a small price to pay for being able to block out distractions and get good work done. - Ambiance review by Joel L (SF)
Purchased because of the highly received reviews but....   ....I have to say I'm not that impressed. I purchased the application 'aSleep' and LOVE it, but with the highly rated reviews of this application I decided that 'more options' meant it would be a winner, and I have to admit I was WRONG... This application lacks many things, the volume for one, which is very important changed dramatically between each sound, so either you can't hear it, or when changing sounds you think your ears are going to start to bleed! The 'crickets' sound, sounds just like the iphone ring tone, the waves one is pretty decent. All in all, I just ended up deleting the application. I think the design of the application is really good, but I have to admit I like the 'touch sounds' better on aSleep, but this is only my opinion, check them both out! Take Care. - Ambiance review by Casey A
Tinnitus GODSEND for an old Army, Vietnam Machine-gunner   THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!I'm 56 years old and I've suffered from tinnitus for many years (as documented by the VA Administration, but they have DONE NOTHING FOR ME!)Three years ago, my tinnitus was driving me NUTS. I couldn't fall asleep at night, I was having difficulty trying to "focus" during the day. I finally found a place in Dallas, Texas that helped me, called Callier Clinic. I went to the CALLIER CLINIC (part of the University of Texas at Dallas) for an evaluation of my tinnitus (and I think they agreed I was nearly off my rocker, from the sounds I heard ALL THE TIME from the tinnitus.) My tinnitus by the way sounds like I have a combination of rattle snakes and June bugs in my ears, with an occasional electronic buzz saw. I spent two years wearing what look like hearing aids that basically generate a "white sound" that in essence drown out the tinnitus and "re-train" your brain so it basically "tunes-out" the noises a tinnitus sufferer hears. After two years (and about $3,000) I finally found some relief from my ailment.I went back to Callier Clinic again for a follow-up (about a year ago). During my meeting with the audiologist, I learned there is a new device on the market that provides additional help for the tinnitus sufferer. My audiologist allowed me to demo the unit briefly in her office.... It was like I had just jumped into a hot-tube after chopping wood all day long. I found immediate relief by this product, that looked almost like an Apple iPod, (made by some folks in Australia.) Except, this device, had I wanted to purchase it, came with a price tag that would set me back $4,000 plus some change. I left the Callier Clinic without buying the device, like a dog with my tail, stuck between his legs (or in my case, between my ears...)Recently, my wife and I purchased "his and hers" iPhone 3Gs. (I own 4 Mac computers, and took to these "new fangled" iPhones like a "Duck To Water." I may be an old fart, but I was (and still am) having a ball with all the APPS you can download for an iPhone... I stumbled into "AMBIANCE" and thought I had died an gone to heaven. For 99 cents, I feel as if I robbed a bank and got the snazzy thing-a-ma-bob I saw at the Callier Clinic in Dallas AND I SAVED $4,000 IN THE PROCESS. I am totally, TOTALLY delighted with my iPhone 3G and especially AMBIANCE... Ambiance has "White Sound, Blue Sound, Brown Sound" and other pleasing sounds that work very effectively for me in regard to the "rattle snakes and June bugs" I hear in my head all the time. You simply CAN NOT imagine how thankful I am for all the wonderful sounds that Matt Coneybeare has in this nice little audio package. No, I am not related to Matt, (I don't even know who the guy is) but I can tell you, I am one of this biggest fans. Now, I can take the $4,000 I saved (by NOT buying that audio gizmo made in Australia) and actually buy an airline ticket and FLY to Australia. Thanks Matt... YOU DONE GOOD! - Ambiance review by My Name Is Roy
Pretty good   Right now without the volume control, I hate most of the noises because they are WAY to loud! But I'm sure that with the volume update I will love this app! - Ambiance review by Ipod love
Many issues!   There are many issues with this product! Please read before you buy:1. It claims that you can delete sounds. This is just not true. It only removes it from the list. Once I installed the application it took up 170 MB! I then deleted all sounds but one and the space on my iPod did not drop. Not at all! Do not be fooled that the sounds will be deleted freeing up space, it only removes it from the main screen. I'm amazed Apple lets developers claim features that are not true.2. The size of the application is huge which takes up too much of my memory. It does come with a lot of sounds but honestly I wouldn't use but maybe 2 of them. I just don't see why 170 MB of space is worth a couple loops. What's up with Sonar? Really? Are there people out there that can't sleep because they need the familiar sound of a submarine sonar system? Just tons of wasted space....3. All of the sounds are not normalized meaning every sound you click will either be softer or louder then the previous and your constantly adjusting the volume. Very annoying!I do not recommend this product at all. There are better products out there and I prefer White Noise which is the same price but has much better sounds, layout, and I haven't found any volume issues. Not to mention White Noise is 1/10 of the size letting me store more apps and songs. Think about this before buying. Click YES if you agree! - Ambiance review by treasurehunter1
Simple Genius   This is ingenious in its simplicity. Pros: numerous "ambient" noises from nature (birds, rain, crickets) and man-made (white/pink/blue noise, subway, fan) all with one purpose: to block out the rest of the aural world. Does this with aplomb. Costs no more than one song on iTunes. You can pay more for a CD of just one or two of these sounds.Cons: At 56+ MB it's the largest app on my iPhone. Would be nice if there were a way to select which sounds are sync'd while others are left on my computer, but that's an issue with the platform not the app. And it's a minor complaint. Very minor. This is still a five-star app for its simple genius. - Ambiance review by iByron
Love It!   This semester is getting rough already and being able to take a moment to zone out is priceless. These soothing sounds are wonderful. - Ambiance review by acarback
I actually use this app and the developer is great!   I use this a couple times a day. At work, at home, when I'm trying to squeeze in a nap. Plus the developer is super responsive and takes users suggestions quite seriously. It is a best seller for a reason, folks. - Ambiance review by Doctor Spin
Not bad   Very nice sounds for less than a buck. Just need at least a timer or something to auto shutoff...say if you fall asleep - Ambiance review by Bassrat
Well worth a dollar   This is a great little app. The sounds mix well so you can't hear the "seams" when they repeat and the pallet of varius noises (pink, white, etc.) is nice. I agree with a previous review: the next version should have a "silent" noise setting as well as a sound at the end of the timer, hopefully a ringtone so we can customize it. Overall, great! - Ambiance review by rocketsmithe
