Japanese Reference - iPhone Application 4 Stars

Write kanji in free program  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
The Chinese kanji recognition keyboard can be used by any program including safari. Kotoba is a better program and it's free. You can handwrite kanji in it by enabling Chinese simplified keyboard in your iPods settings! - Version 1.0.2 - Mar 4, 2009 - Japanese review by Asteriske
Stars to be increased with updates  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I do not understand why this program is getting such good reviews because Kotoba and ShinKanji are both available in free versions. Get those programs first for free and if you are still convinced you want this wait for it to go on sale. I bought this program a month ago and was REALLY let down. The creator assured me there were example sentences which I expected to be in the entries for common words so I could see how they were used in a sentence. They are not! Rather, there is list of sentences by themselves which are just short and ultra basic. There are not enough conjugations to be useful beyond first year Japanese classes either. Please add more advanced verb conjugatuons. The font for the stroke order is not ideal either and you will find a much easier to read stroke order on ShinKanji (all the stroke orders are included even in the free version and the order is numbered with an illustrated starting point unlike in "Japanese"). Also, ShinKanji is reportedly planning on expanding to include compounds, more kanji, and a full dictionary similar to this app. I have found searching with "Japanese" difficult due to words being left out in the "starts with" search results and other unknown glitches, I sometimes have to perform a search several times to get the results I need (that never happens with the free app Kotoba). I only purchased this application because of the upcoming flash cards, and the vocab lists (which take too long to make and are basically useless without the flash cards). At first I really regretted buying this, but I am looking forward to updates. I really want to raise my review and I just added a star after gaining more familiarity with the better features of the app, mainly the linked examples and compounds in the entries. I would give this app five stars if it was either competitively priced or significantly improved so as to meet my initial expectations. - Version 1.0.2 - Feb 6, 2009 - Japanese review by cozykiwibird
Try Kotoba first-- it's free  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Unless this gets example sentences, Kotoba should be tried first. It's essentially the same thing, but free. Although I do prefer the interface of Japanese over Kotoba, the price difference is just too stark to ignore. I will update this review if example sentence are ever added. - Version 1.0.2 - Dec 7, 2008 - Japanese review by Tele-Pet
Excellent reference app, worth the price imo  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Having taken the plunge, I have to say this is an extremely useful J-E/E-J dictionary (with one caveat). Unlike some of the other dictionaries I've seen, you can browse all the words from A-Z, and under the Lists section you can do things like create your own vocabulary list to study from (and you can save it!), look up common expressions, classifications (for science and other categories) and even counters (it includes the conjugation as well, which is quite useful). It also includes hiragana and katakana lists, plus the standard/daily-use kanji. In a nice feature, you can also see the stroke order of the kanji in some of the words that you look up. It even has a Tests section with vocabulary lists from the JLPT tests. I think that the features actually do warrant this price, considering the value you get out of it compared to your average printed dictionary. It gave accurate results in searches, at least for the words I looked up such as earthquake. It returned jishin, along with many varieties of earthquake and related words such as severe earthquake (kyoushin) or disastrous earthquake (resshin) and even the Geat Hanshin earthquake is listed! However, I do have one teensy criticism: looking verbs up in English can be a minor annoyance. Having studied Japanese for 4 years or so, I'm used to including "to" when referring to a verb, ie. "to run" or "to eat" for example. Unfortunately, if you're trying to look a verb up in English here, you can't find it by entering "to run" for example.I was looking up "iku" (to go/proceed, etc.), and it works fine if you look it up using romaji/enter it via the Japanese keyboard OR by typing "proceed." This is just a smidge awkward, so in future versions I'd like to see that fixed/modified so that you can use "to" followed by the verb to look these words up. Oh, I almost forgot: you can adjust settings from the Settings menus too, which I found nice Overall, this is an excellent value in my opinion, so I'd really give it about 4 & 1/2 stars. A very nice app, and to people who whine about the price: try buying a real dictionary and see how much THAT sets you back. Sheesh! - Japanese review by Mizmurder
Awesome!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I have tried many of the other dictionary applications, and most of them, like this one, are derived from the free EDICT online dictionary files. However, this dictionary goes beyond giving you simple definitions, as it also includes JLPT words to help you study, and categorizations to help you understand their context, for example, "Japanese Proverbs".This dictionary is incredible in the way it lets you search on it. You can even search by the partial definition that you are looking for (if you know that Tokyo is the capital of Japan, well, you can also search by "Capital", and that would be one of the results!)I've also emailed the developer, Mark, with a couple of questions, and he answered very promptly (within 24 hours, even though he is half-a-world away in Tokyo!).You should really try this dictionary. You will be very impressed too. - Japanese review by 日本語の学生
Great dictionary for anyone studying Japanese  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Of the numerous Japanese - English dictionaries available, this is the best I've seen for anyone studying Japanese. For native or near-native Japanese speakers, Wisdom and Longman may be more suitable Japanese - English dictionaries but "Japanese" bridges the gap with support for kanji, kana and romaji. For anyone learning kanji, the animated stroke diagrams are particularly useful. The kanji grouped into the levels of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test is also a nice touch. - Japanese review by Not Another Nickname
Average dictionary. Decent for learning.  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
At $9.99 I decided to buy this mostly for the stroke animations. In that aspect it is quite good. I'm glad I didn't pay $20.The presentation is nice, the conjugations are a cool addition, the lists are helpful. This looks like it would be a good learning tool. However, as a dictionary, it isn't nearly as good as Kotoba! in a lot of ways.1) After several failed searchs, I tried the same ones on Kotoba! and it found them immediately. So I would definitely go to Kotoba! first. It's fast and it gets me the results whether I type it in english, kana, or draw the kanji.2) I drew a kanji and it found only that kanji. Kotoba! not only finds the kanji, but also shows me *ALL* the words with that kanji in it. This app only presents a small list of common compounds.3) I have to do a lot of screen moving to get from one thing to another. This is great if I am just learning and browsing, but it doesn't make for a good dictionary experience. So in the end, I am glad I got to try this for $10, anything more would have been too much. I think I will use this app for learning stroke order and when I have time to browse. But I am definitely not going to use it a dictionary. Kotoba! is simply better because of it's singular focus. - Japanese review by Andre Khromov
An awesome dictionary that fits in your pants  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
This app isn't worth $20. It's worth twice that much. That's what you'd pay for a Nelson's character dictionary and the darn thing would still not fit into your pants pocket. This is really the dictionary I've been looking for for years. The ability to look up both in English and Japanese, by stroke count, by radical, animation that shows the stroke order, it's pretty much all there. The interface is fairly intuitive if a little complicated by necessity in some places. One of my favorite features is being able to see what other words a character is in. This really helps in learning the meaning and use of a character. I think Nelson's probably has more combinations but, again, who wants to lug it around? I'm completely thrilled with this app. - Japanese review by Moltz
ABSOLUTELY SUPERB!!! This is the dictionary I was looking for!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Been waiting a while now for THAT one Japanese/English dictionary for the iPhone. There are lots available, but I was happy with using free internet-based ones until the right one came along. Well, no need to wait any longer -- THIS IS THE ONE! Here is why: it has writing recognition for kanji look-up (via Chinese Keyboard) which is so handy, it also has kanji stroke order animations, it has predefined vocabulary lists based on subjects, it has customizable word banks to save those words you are currently learning, it has Hiragana & Katakana reference tables, expressions and proverbs lists, JLPT levels vocabulary and finally, very important for me, are conjugation lists for searched verbs or adjectives! I am sure there are other great stuff I have yet to explore. All I can say is what other dictionary offers what this offers? So for the $20 it is a bargain. I would pay 2-3 times more for this app it is so good! So for those cheapskates asking for it to be $2, seriously, you don’t deserve to own this app if you cannot appreciate the value you are getting for the price that it is. I have already saved myself money from buying more Japanese, kanji and phrase dictionaries in heavy book form. - Japanese review by Tony in Japan
Super app-if it fits your needs  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
If you just need to look up the occasional word this is over kill. If you need complete in-depth definitions you'll find these abbreviated. But for students of Japanese who are learning vocabulary and kanji this is just perfect. There's a video on the website that is as good as a trial. Take a look and you'll get a very complete sense of what this app does. Halfway through that video and I was sold. - Japanese review by Nastebu
Thank you so much!!! I love it!!!!!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I really like all of the things you have done for this app. You are probably wondering why I put 4 stars instead of 5 if I love it so much. Three things.1. When you look at the romanji on some of the words, you would noticed that you have put "ha" in stead of "wa" some of them. は has two ways of pronouncing, "ha" and "wa". You pronounce "ha" if it used as it is part of the word, you pronounce "wa" as if it is a particle. For example, if you look up the word "こんにちは" (konnichiwa), it will say in the romanji part of the description "konnichiha". は in that word isn't part of the word, it is used as a particle for that word. So it should be "konnichiWa" not "ha". You don't want people that just started learning the language start mispronouncing words that has this same mistake. I would advise you to fix that if you want your dictionary to be more accurate.2. When I try to bookmark words, it doesn't save them. It would seemed that it would save them, but when I leave the app and then come back, it erases my bookmarks. Please fix this.3. I'm saving the fifth star for that next update. I can't wait for the flash card add-on. (It would be cooler if you can make a multiple-choice quiz option too.) I know that this is supposed to be a dictionary, but since you mentioned that you are adding the flash card option to it, I thought I could maybe suggest a multiple-choice quiz. It wouldn't keep me from rating this app to a 5 star if you didn't add the quiz.Otherwise, this app is REALLY good and I really like it. I've been waiting for this kind app since I've been waiting for the 2.0 update for the ipod touch. Thank you so much again for making this app. - Japanese review by xxKikoxx2011
Best iPhone Japanese Dictionary Yet.  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
First off, this app is worth way more than $20. There are some other pretty good japanese dictionaries in the store for less but this one does 10x more. In fact, I just got back from a 2 week vacation in Japan and if I had this app I could have left my $300 electronic dictionary at home and done just as well. The ability to look up kanji by drawing them in using the chinese keyboard is worth the price alone. That could be a stand alone app. The categories seemed unnecessary at first but they come in handy. It has JLPT vocabulary lists, the ability to save your own lists (which is being fixed in the next release), it will guess what you wanted (if you leave out the long "u" sound in a word for example), and the way everything is laid out you can just browse around and find new words without looking anything specific up. I've been in contact with the developer and he is extremely nice. This app is already good but I'm sure it will continue to grow and be refined (even though for a 1.0 release it's really solid). I can't speak for advanced students, but I've been studying Japanese for over 2 years now and this fits my needs perfectly. I can see myself using this app for a long time. Thanks! - Japanese review by Ashita no Joe

A Very Useful Japanese Dictionary   Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
It is obvious that the developer has put a lot of thought into the application where he could have just repackaged a publicly available dictionary file. The extra features add a lot of value. It is a very polished app and I have used it quite a bit with no crashes. That said, the information contained in certain paper (Kenkyusha's) and electronic dictionaries (Casio and Canon) is superior to the information in this dictionary. Those dictionaries are either very heavy or very expensive. If you need them, you probably already have them and use them a lot. I have those dictionaries but this fits in my pocket and will do what I need it to do about 95% of the time. - Japanese review by edmo
Excellent!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
This is excellent piece of software. I loved it. I can't wait to see new features. I think upcoming features will make this "reference" software a nice study tool. Developer is really friendly and very quick with questions and suggestions. - Japanese review by thesolaris
Great app  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
This app gets 5/5 because of the handwriting search, even a kana teaching program won't use a writing pad. This is extremely helpful when I am gaming and want to have a real conversation with some of my friends(I am the only non-japanese person in the group) it just takes too long with a standard stroke count dictionary. - Japanese review by SakuraWD
Ichiban!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
This is an amazing resource. It's fast, it's comprehensive, it's worth every penny. I use it all the time. It's really easy to add things to vocabulary lists, which is great for keeping a running list of new vocabulary. I think the best part is the interface, it's just leaps and bounds better than the rest. - Japanese review by Conti
absolutely amazing  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I bought the itouch because i wanted to kill 2 birds with one stone.the feature of a japanese<->English. this dictionary is flippin' amazing. i could not get Kanji (handwriting) recognition to work, but apparently u gotta enable the chinene input through your keyboard settings to get it work. it works like a CHARM. picked up horribly written 16 stroke kanji with no problem at all. totally worth the 20 bucks. i just wish they'd upgrade this with more vocab and phrases. - Japanese review by swapnilmathur
Great product!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I'm a college student in my second year of Japanese language study, and this product works very well for homework and in drill sections. Loads fast(about 3 sec. on my iPhone 3G) for how many entries it has. The programmer is great about responding quickly to emails about bugs and issues. - Japanese review by ikara19
Great App!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
That app rocks, it's perfect for any GAIJIN for looking up things, but also for studying whenever you have a few minutes to spare on the subway or so! I love the character, word, etc., linking throughout the software. And the Kanji animation is just awesome. You can even brush up on your JLPT. No more carrying around that bulky $300 electronic dictionary! - Japanese review by adannenb
