► MAP DATA: NAVTEQ

► WHAT IS THE G-MAP?
G-map is the first voice-prompted turn-by-turn GPS navigation software available for iPhone and iPod Touch. No wireless connection needed to get you to the destination.

► WHAT ARE THE MAJOR FEATURES?
- Live traffic: Displays the level of traffic on your route in different colors. Allows you to avoid traffic tie-ups by choosing alternative routes, all presented with real-time traffic information.
- Text-To-Speech: Speaks street names, so you can keep your eyes on the road.
- Instantly converts iPhone’s address book contacts to routing destinations.
- Music automatically resumes after navigation voice guidance
- Automatic resumption of navigation after a telephone call
- A.I. (Artificial Intelligence) Routing: G-map actually learns your route preferences and applies them in future route guidance
- Point on Map: When you touch any point on the map, the G-map provides detailed location information, including street address, city, state, zip code and phone number. G-map also offers the option for a route from your current location to the point on the map you’ve selected. This is helpful when you know the vicinity of a destination, but not exact address.
- Real 3D View: G-map provides detailed, realistic 3-D renderings of major urban intersections and highway junctions for 185 metro areas, in your choice of full or half-screen configuration.
- Flexible Trip Planning: Enables user to add multiple waypoints when creating route and simulate the routing among them all. Ideal when making numerous stops during one trip.
- Suggested Keyword Search: G-map intuitively suggests search results, based on letters you enter. This saves you time when entering data and the suggested options are helpful when you are unsure of exact location names.
- Simulated Routing: G-map lets you preview your route by animating the path of the entire route of to the selected destination. This feature helps you to understand the route and select an alternative, if you prefer.

great little navigator  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I used this on a 3 hour trip from Detroit to Grand Rapids. The 3-D view popped up a few times - cool.Overall it was very good. While audio prompts would be nice, I am a visual person and do not need them. I like the idea of of a pinging sound that would get faster/louder as you approach the turn. Lost the signal a couple of times for a fraction of a second at the long underpasses in Southfield, but no big deal. I purposely made a few wrong turns and was amazed at how fast it compensated - especially from what I've read about some of the dedicated GPS units. After 3 hours, plugged in to car power, my phone was just barely warm. I've used google maps for the same trip and it got hot enough to cook an egg - and actually shut down the phone. I will try some shorter trips sans power plug, though the power loss should be substantially less since only the GPS is used and not 3G/Edge antennae.Overall, a well-spent $20. - Version 1.3 - Feb 21, 2009 - G-Map U.S. East review by lvt
ALMOST THERE!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I gave this app a 4 star review since I have had it since it first appeared, and it has gotten better with every update. A 5 star review would be possible if they fix 5 issues:1. The miles till next turn font is way to small.2. Instead of the sound efx before a turn, a voice prompt would be a nice touch.3. The screen should not "lock out" while the app is being used.4. The map sometimes jumps around and changes orientation.5. Easier navigation and clearer directions on app.ALL IN ALL, Good first true navigation app before 3.0 hits. ALMOST THERE! Looking forward to the next update from G-MAP.Thanks. - Version 1.3 - Mar 29, 2009 - G-Map U.S. East review by Hondo1
1.3 Upgrade Made This App Worse.  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Out of all the apps I have downloaded, I have never wrote a review. This upgrade has made a great app so bad, I had to vent. G-Map has went from a real turn by turn navigation to a joke. The last version showed the showed the distance between two points. You knew how far you had to travel before the next turn. This new version has a escalation bar at the top of the screen that turns green when you are close to a turn. You now have to guess the distance between two points. The previous version also displayed proper turn indicators w/ distance before the turn. Now the map shows some kind of generic intersection that highlights which way you should go. Do not up grade to 1.3. You've been warned. - Version 1.3 - Apr 1, 2009 - G-Map U.S. East review by Dash69
I like the app but...  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I think there is a big flaw in G-Map East. Illinois, Michigan, Tennessee and Wisconsin are butchered and divided between the East and West Apps.I don’t see the logic behind this strategy. I routed a trip to Madison, Wisconsin from Alabama and the map routed me through Indiana instead of Illinois. I kept getting an error when I tried to route through Illinois. Lo and behold the reason is the part of Illinois I want to go through is not on the East map. I don't think developer is clear enough about this. I think it would be better to have complete maps of these states in the East map. Also Nashville is on the East map and Memphis is on the West map. It makes no sense.I hope they will fix this. - Version 1.2 - Mar 8, 2009 - G-Map U.S. East review by WabiSabi in Bama
Great app since the recent update to add turn-by-turn!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
First of all this app is worth the price. Many of the lower reviews may have been before the latest update that added directions and fixed many bugs. This blows Google Maps away for turn-by-turn directions. All it lacks is voice prompts which Apple's rules do not allow right now. This is the closest thing to a Garmin nuvi you will get on an iPhone right now. This app does not need a wireless connection to operate as the maps are loaded onto your iPhone. I am using this on an iPhone 3G and found that this app works very well.A few things I would like to see added is a way to get to my Contacts as most of the addresses I need are already there, a built-in way to suspend the screen time out so I do not have to go to the iPhone settings every time and a landscape mode would be nice. I am not complaining here, just suggesting what could make this app a bit better.Paying $10 per month for what Verizon Wireless or TeleNav offers that needs a wireless cell connection is nuts, when an app like G-Map is available. Just wish Apple would loosen the restrictions to allow voice prompts! Great app, nice work, congrats to the developer. Most expensive app I have bought so far, but well worth it! - Version 1.3 - Feb 22, 2009 - G-Map U.S. East review by digiprod
Merge the Maps  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I live near the line in Madison, WI. If I'm going to LaCrosse, WI 2 hours away this can't get me there because the map ends there. I'm not sure what would happen if I owned the other Map, but I'm not going to find out by blowing another $20. If I knew this would work, I would definitely buy it, but I haven't heard back from the devloper and it's been a week. If you live on the east coast, or west coast this would be a great application. For those of us who travel from the East Map to the West Map, I'm not sure I can recommend this. - Version 1.2 - Feb 27, 2009 - G-Map U.S. East review by jjv07
Dissatisfied - wasted $20  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Poor map displays -- cant' see major street names in my area in any zoom!!! No pinch zoom. Very old or incomplete POIs -- stores that have been here for years are missing -- e.g. Microcenter and Target (Southfield Rd). Doesn't link to my contacts or have any mechanism yet to add Favorites that I can find. Doesn't use my wifi location like Google maps -- I'm in MI and it puts me in NYC. Used Mapopolis on a PalmTX without GPS for years and hoped this would be similar or even better -- boy was I wrong g-maps isn't even close! I feel taken for spending $20 -- this at best is a very incomplete beta and should not have been sold. - G-Map U.S. East review by jrlii
Awful app, avoid, save your money and use Google maps. See my huge list of bugs in full review.  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
In a few words: An interesting beta at best, with serious bugs and flaws, but it does sort of kind of have turn by turn directions. Wait until the bugs get fixed, the UI gets improved, and until it integrates with the contact info already in your phone before you purchase. So flawed I asked for a refund after a thorough test.Problems:- barks back at my Griffin RoadTrip charger/mount, tries to tell me to put the phone into airplane mode. When I say no to that it still works fine. . .no other app or function has ever caused my 3g iPhone any compatibility problems with my Griffin RoadTrip- Directions it gives are just plain weird! Yes it will get you to your destination, but it feels like it is taking you on an "evade pursuit" mode. XROAD's website claims to use NAVTEQ (a big supplier of maps to Dodge, and Yahoo, among many many others), but I completely dispute this claim. The directions the app gave me for a 3 mile trip from my house to a friends took me on a route using ALL side streets (approx 18 stop signs and 10-11 minutes of slow speed driving). Navteq's own direction finding website http://www.us.map24.com/ gave me completely different directions (and actually the route I normally use) and a 7 min estimate of time. So this uses Navteq's info how?? Mapquest returned the same results. Google Maps returned approx 95% similar guidance results but sacrificed a little bit of a shorter route by a few tenths of a mile but in doing so put me off a main (and faster) road for that section.- UI for all intents and purposes is of very poor design, some of this I'd wager is due to things that got lost in translation from programmer's native language, but some of it is just plain bad programming. i.e. Why is there a "where to" and a "routes"? - Creating, managing, or reversing a "route" are all nonsensical and extremely difficult menus to navigate through. . .I learned just to use the "where to" to input my destination.- Bad/awful destination input. . . - for towns that have numbered street names (i.e. 2nd Ave) they don't appear in numerical order - Every street appears twice, if the street is actually called "Elm Avenue" you will get both "Elm" & "Elm Avenue" as suggestions - Destination input by phone number? Useless and essentially broken, and no it doesn't either look things up live by doing a reverse # search, nor does it look through your contact list. . .very convenient if you happen to know the telephone number to, say, a dunkin donuts in new york, and need to get there though. . . - No integration with the contacts already in your phone (HUGE oversight) - No traffic updating (Google Maps has it, why doesn't this?) - Redundant and non intuitive submenus of destinations (i.e. real examples - favorites, POI, my POI, and recently found. . .or address, zip code, and city name) those could be consolidated into about 2 or 3 logical menus- No audible or visual (blink the screen maybe??) alert of upcoming turns, you have to actually watch the screen and keep an eye on distance to next street.- In order to make this app work you must go into your settings and disable auto-lock and disable auto-brightness (doing these two things takes about 8 key presses) and then re-enable them when you're finished using it in GPS mode. . .- If you stop your guidance and switch to another app (phone, contacts, safari, etc.) then switch back to XROAD app there isn't a way to jump right back into your original trip, you sort of have to reinitiate the process.- Doesn't use multitouch for zoom/unzoom, it actually has largish on screen buttons for zooming (!?!! why ?!) but you can use your finger to pan around.- A lot of instances that involve "veering" or otherwise transitioning onto a street that don't necessitate an exact 90 degree turn, well it doesn't consider these real turns thus doesn't feel the need to make you aware that they you might have to veer hard to the right ahead.- What is the weird icon that looks like an arrow pointing into a car for? What does it do? Why does it disappear/appear?What works:- Tells you what street you are on (on bottom of screen), and what street your next turn will be on (on top of screen).- Tells you what direction (left/right) your next turn will be and counts down the distance to that turn up in the upper right hand corner. - Recalculates on the fly if you go off the suggested route. - (At times) a visually appealing 3D-esque guidance that intuitively (most of the time) moves with your natural change of direction. However, switching from a 2D to 3D mode is neither intuitive nor always functional. In summation: Unless for some crazy reason you really NEED arrows to tell you when to turn (and you're willing to trade off that desire for practically a guarantee that you will be given unusual if not downright awkward guidance and there is a large possibility it will not consider all the directional changes you will need to make are really "turns") just stick with the free Google Maps app. Personally I can live without the arrows and the 20+ frustrating bugs for now. - G-Map U.S. East review by ryanweath
A decent, and currently only, auto recalculating! mapping program  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
GPS app with auto recalculating routes. Is goggle maps better? Yes, for pure maps, but goggle maps does not tell you where to turn next (while tracking) nor does it auto recalculate. And you can use this if you have no service. Room for improvement for sure, but a decent start that will hopefully sell well, get updates, and force other companies to put their turn by turn auto recalculating apps out into the market. - G-Map U.S. East review by Quilliam
BY A GARMIN, THIS APP WILL TAKE YOU NOWHERE  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
THIS APP HAS NO TURN LEFT OR RIGHT, HEAD NORTH, SOUTH ,EAST, WEST TEXT, {EXAMPLE} IT TELLS YOU TO GO TO I-480 BUT DOES NOT SAY GO I-480 WEST OR EAST. I HAVE SEVERAL GPS UNITS AND THIS APP IS FAR FROM BEING A NAVIGATIONAL AID. DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY, BUY A GPS UNIT IF YOU WANT TO GO SOMEWHERE AND THAT IS NO LIE. - G-Map U.S. East review by TAKEOFF145

Terrible...$20 a joke  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
No worth even as a free app. The most confusing piece of sh*t software I have ever encountered. I want a refund. I usually never write reviews, but I just got robbed. - G-Map U.S. East review by Brian1502
Subpar but Hopeful  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I purchased this application in support of the notion of the development of viable GPS for the iphone. The application is a fundamental beginning, nothing more. A great deal of work is needed before this application can be useful. The maps are unimpressive. Clearly Apple has culpability and I cannot comprehend why Apple impedes the development of a better GPS application! - G-Map U.S. East review by bx303
This is not what you think...  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I expected to see some 3D view like the one on the example, and its doesnt have that. It doesnt give you a list of turn by turn directions either. - G-Map U.S. East review by pgjbronx
Great Start!!!!  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Despite all the bad reviews I have to admit that this app is great. Although people are giving it bad reviews for no turn by turn there is no reason to give it bad reviews due to that only because they aren't allowed to have it on there. I'll admit there is some work that needs to be done to make it more polished but I used it to go on a few appointments today and it worked with great accuracy. - G-Map U.S. East review by Jcapz
Very confusing  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Without A manual this not understandable. I will never Get an app again with no instructions Very irresponsible. - G-Map U.S. East review by outerlimits

Potential Killer GPS App  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I have been using G-Map East since shortly after it was released. The update on Feb. 7 cured the most of the early problems and it truly is the only turn-by-turn driving application on the App Store at this time. The addition of voice prompts and ETA to destination will be welcome additions in a future update. The application uses NavTeq maps and works as advertised plus there are both a PDF Quick Start Guide and a Users Guide on the Xroad website. Routing is very good in most cases and route recalculation is excellent. The real beauty of this application is that it isn't necessary to have a cell signal at all. By the way, there are true split screen 3D images of complex intersections even in West Virginia. Support is excellent and the vendor responds promptly. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with G-Map East. - G-Map U.S. East review by FerrariV12
A good start, but needs improvement  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
This is a good start to what could be a great application for the iPhone. An ideal feature would be to offer a "track up" view of the route rather than force a north up view; it would eliminate confusion over which way to turn at a road change. Otherwise this is fairly well done. - G-Map U.S. East review by Steven Buehler
