Sensitive to your breath, touch and movements, Ocarina is more versatile than an actual flute:
• Blow air into your mic to create music
• Touch combinations of holes to play notes
• Tilt to change vibrato rate and depth
• Advanced users can change keys and modes, including C-Major and Zeldarian mode
With Ocarina, you can also hear people learning to play around the world:
• Listen in on Ocarina players all over the world just by tapping the globe icon
• Rate your favorite performances
• Name your Ocarina so others can listen to you play
• Share your favorite performances with family and friends via e-mail

On the fast track to be the most popular app on the iPhone   I do not review apps often. I use them, get bored, and toss them, even if I really liked the app.The problem is that no one really had an incredibly imaginative way to leverage the iPhone's features. Sure, multitouch is cool, pinching and zooming is pretty neat, but there was always something missing.Come the Ocarina app, and my previous impressions of the viability of the iPhone as an entertainment platform were blown out of the water. This is an awesome app. The keys are incredibly responsive, the sensitivity of the microphone is just right (needs some practice so you don't miss the microphone with the air blown from your mouth), and the interface is simple yet beautiful. The world navigator to see others playing is neat looking and pleasing to watch. The social networking features are pretty neat, you can listen to other people in the world while they clumsily learn how to play the Ocarina. Every so often you'll come across someone that does it very well. I wish there was a way you could track a certain person, for example, if you stumbled upon someone that was especially good or creative. However, the idea is better than the implementation. Not that it's improperly implemented, but some features are clearly missing. First, I think, there should be modifier keys for raising or dropping half a note from the currently selected one. Also, it would be very helpful if there was some on-screen feedback of what note is currently being pressed. This would help beginners out a lot. Something a little more advanced, there is clearly space for 6 or maybe even 8 buttons on the screen for more advanced players. I understand how things can get hairy, especially with the lack of tactile feedback. I am certain that this app's upcoming popularity will bring upon some nice updates. I, however, plan on informing the development team of my suggestions. My wife and I are having TONS of fun with this thing. The youtube video of a man playing stairway to heaven on his guitar with the 4 ocarinas playing background is delicious. This, however, has quickly become our favorite app and we plan to spend some time making music between each other, or perhaps she can complement my guitar. For 99 cents (introductory, I believe), this is an app you HAVE to get. It can only get better with updates, and you can only get better with practice. - Ocarina review by dgcaste
Awesome   This is the best smule app so far, it's fun to play and the world view is great, it's so cool to hear music and see where it's coming from around the world.. Can't wait to see what comes next with updates and apps from smule!!! - Ocarina review by rawsnow
Fantastic application   This is an extremely well-executed musical instrument for the iPhone, imaginative in its conception and clean in its execution. One thing i've noticed--it works better if you keep your screen really clean. Also, like any instrument, it rewards practice. Even in an hour my playing improved.I have two suggestions for the programmers that would really put it over the top: ability to select different tones or voices; ability to shift down an octave during a song.Bravo! - Ocarina review by StevarinowithanOcarina
WAY too cool!   Another winning idea - and execution - from Smule. I'm not musically inclined but based on their other successes I grabbed this one to play with and am having so much fun with it. It's very easy to use and produces great sound with little effort. The social aspect is interesting as well. Really looking forward to where they to next with this concept. - Ocarina review by NickS
So cool!   Once I saw that you could play Zelda on the iPhone I was sold! It takes a while to pick up if your not used to playing wind intruments. This app is a steal at $0.99! Love it! By far my most favorite download so far! Keep it up Smule! - Ocarina review by JenovaCell
Incredible!!   I felt like searching the app store to see if there was an ocarina playing program and came across this little gem. It is truly amazing and plays basically just like a real ocarina. The zelda mode is my favorite as I live playing songs from the game! $0.99 is a bargain for this amazing app!! If you like the ocarina or making music on the iPhone in a fun and realistic way, you will not regret buying this! Truly innovative and excellent. - Ocarina review by ocarinaoftime
Freakin Craaaazy!   This is one more example of what some of the amazing developers out there who think outside the box can do. Beautifully done and well worth the buck. - Ocarina review by Techmate
Awesome   Absolutely awesome application. Totally worth the $0.99! - Ocarina review by M@tt858
clever!   simple and beautifully done! the worldview and ability to listen to others playing is really wonderful and extremely clever. well done! worth every penny. - Ocarina review by wilcothedog
A real instrument   I've played with many of the musical apps for the iPhone and this is the first that is like real instrument.
I've played with pianos that are maybe a dozen keys, guitars with a couple of frets... They're all cute to play with for a couple of minutes, but you can't imagine playing an actual tune on them. But this works!
It's subtle and responds to finesse. The site to guide you is very good also. I can't wait to see where this goes! - Ocarina review by Atanguay
5 stars   This is such an innovative use of the technology that I had to bite. I love it. It's so much fun. One suggestion would be to allow the user to move the "holes" around to their liking so that the notes might make a little more sense. Alot of fun though and impressive. - Ocarina review by Cowtown2
Great idea, room for improvement   Ocarina is a fantastic idea which is poorly executed. The interface is beautiful, clean, intuitive -- this is great! The trademark Smule world interface is wonderful when it is working, but I found on this day where Ocarina was the 3rd top paid app there were often times when the global Ocarina map had no musicians to be found. I double checked that my network (at home on WiFi) was working and it worked fine with other apps. Some sort of feedback here would be great: "Ocarina world server busy" etc.The sound of the instrument is very disappointing, and I am surprised that others do not notice its intrusive, intermittent and heavy distortion. The intermittent nature of it is key, as it is clear that the distortion is not present intentionally. I was playing Ocarina today while waiting for an oil change and my wife didn't even look up from her complimentary newspaper but simply said: "its distorted". Also, for a solo instrument that actually has human breath information available to it, the sound is dead and lifeless. If the developers were interested in "truly" creating "the first true musical instrument" for the iPhone (and one ought to be suspicious of Smule's definition of the word "true" here) they might want to consider taking some of the rich sound dynamics of the performer's breath and use it to bring Ocarina's sound to life. Also I felt that my breath would trigger the sound in a toggle fashion -- the sound would either become loud and distorted suddenly or fall silently too quickly. A "true" musical instrument ( :) ) is more expressive than this. Just as with brakes on a car, musical instruments are not controlled well with toggles.3 stars is my honest rating. While I was tempted to bring it down to 1 or 2 stars to help "balance" the ratings I think such tendency is cheap, dishonest, and unfair to hard working developers out there. Keep up the good work, Smule. - Ocarina review by Waffletower
Smule is The Best in AppStore   Smule in my opinion has most of the best apps in appstore. I love there apps and all and each one is great - Ocarina review by Bomiz
My favorite app in the appstore!!!   Seemed interesting... turned out to be awesome... grew on me even further... NOW MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE APP!!! Would still buy it for 5 times the cost, no questions asked. - Ocarina review by Goteman
Clever concept, but dangerous for an iPhone   Blowing into the iPhone's speaker will cause moisture damage which is not covered under Apple's warentee. Cool concept for an app but not worth the costly risk. - Ocarina review by Dre1973
Wow!   Favorite app!! Worth just .99 cents. Perfect way to show what the iPhone can do. - Ocarina review by dd08
Allows User-Created Music!   If you go to their website listed in the application itself, they have a forum dedicated to users posting their created sheet-music of various songs! They have software in place within the forum to generate music based on the key and "mode" (Ionian, Zeldarian, etc) you want it in! I've spent the last hour playing a version of Zelda someone posted on the forums, and adding my own little flourishes to it! Holding the iPhone straight causes a straight pitch, and the degree to which you tilt your iPhone adds vibrato! An absolute STEAL at $.99! - Ocarina review by Jimfletcha
I love this thing!!   OMG! so cool. I'm still learning how to play it but this thing works really well. Good work smule again. I just found their online forum too and there's tons of music in there to play. I even wrote my own using their "Online Score Generator" - Ocarina review by benderama
