Please also see our new "VelaClock Sun/Moon" app. VelaClock Classic is a world clock that can quickly display the time of sunrise, sunset, three kinds of twilight (civil, nautical, astronomical), moonrise, moonset, daylight duration, moon phase and tilt, date and times for the next four moon phases, countdown to the next sunrise or sunset and next moonrise or moonset, and more.
VelaClock Classic's feature set makes it especially popular among photographers, enabling them to find the magic hour, the time of moonrise and the next full moon. "VelaClock is a must have application for any photographer with an iPhone."
- Martin Bailey, Nature Photographer, Japan
VelaClock Classic can display sun/moon information for:
- your current location (using the network or built-in GPS).
- cities around the world (over 500 cities currently available).
- user-defined locations by specifying latitude/longitude and time zone.
At a glance, VelaClock Classic shows whether a city is currently in daylight, twilight or night. White text indicates daylight (sun is above horizon) and black text indicates night (sun is below horizon). A twilight indicator (a small colored rectangle) will appear to the right of the time when the city is in twilight.
The rows in the city list can optionally show a daylight bar that gives the user a picture of 24 hours of natural light (bright daylight, three kinds of twilight and night). The daylight bar (24 hours of light) may be centered at noon or current time. A thin white bar indicates when the moon is visible.
The detail area, below the list of cities, has three panels. A quick swipe of the finger will move between the three panels.
The date/time can be changed by tapping on the calendar icon in the toolbar. Incrementally move a day, an hour, a minute or a week in the future or the past. Arbitrarily jump to any date or time, years in the future or the past. Changing the date allows one to determine when a sunset or full moon will occur in the future or the past.
VelaClock Classic does NOT require a network connection. Up to 50 cities may be added. Vela Design Group

Worth every penny!   My favorite app on the iPhone. It would be nice to also know what time the sun will be at its high point in a given day as well as the the angle of the sun at its high point. Otherwise, this app is perfect!

Beautifully done   Very nicely done, shows * "Next Sunrise 5:53am - in 3hours 6 minutes" * "Next Moonset 1:52pm - in 11hours 5 minutes" * "Waning Crescent" picture of moon shape* "New Moon in 5 days, 17hours, 36minutes"and of courseSun Rise/Set + locationMoon Rise/Set + locationTwilight: Civil/Nautical/AstronomicalBasically all it promises it does. What would i improve, hmmm.... maybe add something, there is just 1 page for setting New Locations, or remove them... but i don't know what i would add.Very nicely done, it gathers information into a single screen, with multiple information for Moon/Sun... other applications should be like that!! so that you don't need to look at 3 applications, but just 1. $3.99 is justified for this product, less would be nice, but this way hopefully we can keep getting quality from Vela :-).Hopefully they can add other products, for example System Info and Calendar applications... the current ones need improvement

Excellent data presentation   VelaClock presents a host of data in a high-density yet easy to absorb manner. The daytime/twilight graphs are superb, and they include local moon visibility. The bottom window provides precise timing details, plus basic altitude/azimuth positioning, and is easy and intuitive to navigate (has three panels). The calendar overlay provides a quick way to move forward or backward in time, at various timesteps.I highly recommend this app for any traveler - business, pleasure, or armchair.

Nearly perfect   I'm an astronomer and this is the closest sunrise/set to my ideal.
It just needs an option for more than 1 custom location based on manual lat/lon, length of darkness and the different twilites and it would be perfect!
Still definitly worth the price!

Perfect!   This app had been perfect since the beginning and just keeps getting better with every update! One thing I would love to see in a future update, and in my opinion would complete the app, is a tide times chart. High tide and low tide with the levels if rise and fall. Thank you for a reasonably priced app that performs its function well!

Great product and customer service.   This is a solid product that does just what it promises, and their customer service has been personal, prompt and very helpful, allowing me to resolve questions that turned out to be related more to iPhone issues than their app.

Comprehensive Sun and Moon Info   I have been looking for an iPhone app that would show sunrise and sunset times plus info on moon phase and times. VelaClock does that and more. I spent too much time researching what should have been a simple purchase. I started with a short list of desired features but as I looked into each available app, the list grew to include things like the ability to navigate to any day or time, past, present, or future. The daylight bars are very nice and the compact view of sun, moon, and twilight times are perfect. VelaClock has the right blend of features without being too technical or just eye candy.

Excellent! Exactly what I was looking for!   This is PERFECT. Very useful for people who travel frequently and/or communicate with people across multiple time zones. Gives an excellent perception of the time in a certain city: concepts like sunrise/sunset are rarely integrated into clocks, but with this you can have a better impression of how a certain city is progressing through the day. - VelaClock Classic review by Prisonnet
Finally!   VelaClock has always been a great application; I have used the desktop version for years--If you really travel and schedule with people all over the world, it is the best application there is (IMHO) -- truly invaluable. Porting it to the iPhone is a natural! Thanks. - VelaClock Classic review by Jet Lagged
very disappointed   i own both the widget and the desktop app for my laptop and was expecting this to be just a fully featured. i'm a photographer who uses it for sunrise and sunset calculations and for it to only show you how many minutes/hours it is til sunrise/sunset is really really silly. why not just show me the time and don't forget about civil sunrise/sunset. for a pay app i expected more. hoping this gets fixed in updates. - VelaClock Classic review by mcreston
Great app for photographers   This is a very useful application for photographers. Not only is it great to know when dusk will set in, but also to know when the moon will rise relative to day and night. If you want to take pictures of the moon, you usually want to do that when it's not entirely dark and when the moon is still fairly low.A suggestion I have is to show the daylight bars for the currently selected location (and the phase of the moon) for the next 30 or 60 days when the phone is turned sideways. That would be extremely useful to find the best time for pictures. It would also be interesting to see how the times change for both sun and moon.I think the price is okay, though I may not have bought it for $9.99. If you think it's too expensive, there's a simple solution though: don't buy it! - VelaClock Classic review by ghoti
Like to see it do alarms also, great app though.   I've had the widget for a couple of years now (deluxe version), great little application, so this is a must for my ipod touch. - VelaClock Classic review by Ned Black Bush
Wonderful   This may have been the first non-free iPhone app that I bought. I bought the desktop widget version before, and have always liked it. As for this app, I like the way it uses your current location as one of its locations, saving me the trouble of adding my current city when I travel. If you're considering getting this, I would say that it comes in handy, probably more often than you imagine it will. - VelaClock Classic review by macorchard
Great App!   This application presents a ton of information in a relatively clean interface. Definitely the best app I've found for showing (civil) twilight hours. I've purchased a copy for both my wife and myself. - VelaClock Classic review by SeanReilly
Very nice, well-thought-out app   For those of us who are fascinated by this stuff, VelaClock does a great job of showing a lot of information with an uncluttered interface. - VelaClock Classic review by brennaman
Great!   Beautiful presentation and highly fuctional. One of the best apps out there. - VelaClock Classic review by Peter5364
VelaClock Rocks   Just bought this app to replace Ephemeris on my Pocket PC. As a photographer I like to catch the full moonrise in my images. This app gets me 90% of the way there. It tells me when the moon will rise, and most importantly WHERE in the sky it will rise, so I can position myself to get the moon rising over a landmark. The 'use current location' is fantastic, because I don't have to enter latitude and longitude beforehand. VelaClock figurea sll that out for me. The only thing missing is the ability to look at days/months/years in the future, so I can plan to be somewhere when the moon will be at the right position. After speaking with the developers they are adding that functionality soon, and that will raise my rating to a full 5 stars. Keep up the great work! - VelaClock Classic review by Nativecolorado
An absolutely great product.   Having access to sun rise/set times and where that will take place is a necessary piece of information for my work as a cinematographer. I very grateful Vela is making the iPhone version more like the widget. Very useful app and very reasonably priced. Great job! - VelaClock Classic review by e.gustavo
Really good for the first version   It's still lacking some key features compared to the Dashboard widget, but I have faith it will get there soon. As it is, it already offers most relevant information. - VelaClock Classic review by phototrek
