AT&T Navigator transforms your iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G or iPad into a voice-guided GPS navigation system with turn-by-turn driving directions and other features that are just as helpful for when you are driving across town as they are for driving across the country. A subscription charge will appear on your AT&T wireless bill. You can choose between monthly or annual subscription options (details below).
AT&T Navigator is a GPS navigation tool for the AT&T iPhone 4, 3GS, 3G and iPad. It does not work on the original iPhone or the iPhone 4 on Verizon.

Already cancelled I thought I'd give it a try - even though a stand alone GPS is about the same price as having this application for a year. What made me cancel was the fact that you have to enter an address - you cant select the "goto" address from your iphone address book. This seems silly to me.

Mediocre app The maps are not downloaded to your phone, if you are in an area with no data tha app becomes useless. Might as well just use google maps. Poor app do not give ATT any more money.

WARNING: $10 Monthly Subscription I was excited to see this released for us AT&T customers, but they want $9.99 a MONTH! Give me a f*ck** break! I might pay $9.99 as a one time fee, but per month! Noooo way! They already cost me an arm and leg just for voice and data for my iPhone. Get real. Wait for Tomtom's turn-by-turn app.

New version in less than 12 hours! More and more skeptical about this app. There's already a new version but doesn't address fail to navigate to contacts and no iTunes integration for listening to music while you drive. Misses the mark.

Disappointing Just used this app on my way into office and seriously disappointed. Very, very slow to recalc. Also told me to exit that was for a different street than map showed. And why no integration with iTunes so could listen to music and get turn-by-turn voice guide over the stereo when music is muted? Maps are really rinky dink. Looks like a half-effort by old ma bell.

Are you kidding me? Seriously? $9.99 a month? the iPhone has GPS built in! why do I need to pay to use it? If I bought a Garmin or a Tom Tom gps unit there is no monthy fee so why is there a monthy fee for this App? This is seriously not cool.

No integration with iPhone contacts? I keep hope I'm missing something obvious but so far, I can't find a way to use the addresses already stored in the Contact application on my iPhone. That's a huge flaw. One of the great features of the iPhone platform is how everything fits together so well. AT&T Navigator breaks that badly.

Not a bad app but misses on several points First of all, the maps are clean and accurate. The colorful map dis[lay seen on the app iTunes page only shows up when a route is planned, otherwise, the maps look allot like Google maps.Directions are spoken nice and loudly including street names.Lane assist is not a feature.Maps are not downloaded which can be a problem when traveling in remote areas. I'll be giving this a good trial for one month but it is doubtful that I will keep it. This is good for those who only need temporary need for a GPS for a vacation or road trip without the expense of a stand alone GPS.

Unreliable, Unintelligible, Generally Awful. I decided I'd subscribe for a month just to see if it could hold me over until the TomTom app is finally released… and no, it won’t. There are so many problems with this app that it’s just ridiculous.First off is the price. This app is neither cheap nor free - it tags your AT&T account with a $9.99/month fee - which, amortized over the course of 1 year, is about $120 / yr. For that, you could buy a dedicated GPS unit that doesn't suffer from the problems I'm about to list off.I just used the app for a 160 mile trip on my new 3GS. Most of the trip was on highway but there were a few points where we needed to use some surface streets and navigate some labyrinthine residential tracts. The first two problems were evident right away. One, the app does not make use of your contacts list at all - forcing you to exit out of the Navigator app and copy/past the address in pieces from your Contact List app (assuming you’re driving to a place in your contacts). That is, in my opinion, a pretty major oversight.I should say, however, that we were thrilled to notice that there is an option for plotting routes based on current traffic reports. Before leaving, we compared two routing methods - "fastest" and "traffic optimized", and compared them to Google Maps traffic reports. Traffic optimized did avoid one stretch of highway that Google Maps confirmed was really backed up. Neat.The second problem I noticed right off the bat was the voice. It's so badly muffled, tinny, and distorted that no-one in the car was able to make out 90% of what the thing was saying. The voice is not clear, and the pronunciation is awful. It took us nearly twenty minutes for us to figure out that "Fish-ean W***es" meant "15 North." It is really, truly, honestly the worst synthesized GPS voice I have heard in 7 years - rendering that feature almost completely unusable. The whole point of using this kind of app is to allow a solo driver to watch the road while getting directions. That is not going to happen with this app. The voice is unintelligible.But there’s more! Over the course of the trip we noticed three more critical problems... first, because ALL of the data is pulled over the 3G network in real time (as opposed to being cached right on the phone itself like most proper GPS units) while also using the GPS, your battery drains so fast that you can almost see it moving right before your eyes. This app should never, ever, EVER be used without a car power adapter. It will drain the battery of a fully charged phone in about 1hr.Also, because the maps are pulled over the air in real time, any dead zones or loss in service (which happens quite often with AT&T) can make your maps disappear (which happened to us twice). The navigator will keep giving you directions based on it’s initial calculation, but if you happen to need a recalculation while in a service dead-zone, you are SCREWED.More egregiously, however, is the fact that, while it functioned well for calculating the route, it was TERRIBLE at actually navigating... especially on surface streets. While picking up a friend, we had navigate a confusingly laid-out suburb where almost all the streets were curved. The very MOMENT we entered the area, the app started recalculating the route every 10 seconds so that we actually had to exit the app and examine Google Maps for directions. On the way back out, while trying to get back to the highway, the app kept mapping out double U-turns (which we ignored), which was brilliant.So here's the cliffs notes: AT&T Navigator is a completely worthless piece of garbage. It's expensive, it's unreliable, and it's unintelligible. Just keep memorizing your Google Maps routes and wait for the TomTom app. This thing is a complete waste of money.

Battery Killer I have the iPhone 3GS and am using the 3.0 software. You need to have 3G activated when Navigating is in use or the program runs slow. Keep your iPhone plugged in when using app because the battery drains quickly!!!

Adequate but far from perfect Sound stops if you plug in a headset then unplug while still on a trip. Missing points of interest icons (food, gas, etc) on map views. Traffic alerts not functional, at least not in my city. AUDIO IS HORRIBLE, not optimized for the iPhone speaker - unusable without headphones...with headphones makes for unsafe driving.

Does a reasonable job, but has room for improvement Decided to try it out for a month.The program actually works better than I expected. (My expectations were fairly low to begin with, since this GPS system does not store full map database onboard the iPhone)I would certainly like the update speed to be a bit faster, but it was much faster than I originally expected!Try using it with a Griffin RoadTrip. Works great.. The iPhone Charges while using the iPhone/GPS, and it routes the audio from the GPS program to your car stereo, via the built in FM Radio. In addition, you can play music from the iPod portion of the phone and the GPS will mute the music and announce directions thru the car stereo, automatically as needed.Screen update is a little slow, especially if you are traveling slowly. But so far it has been quite accurate. (Caveat here, in that I have only used the GPS for a few short trips so far...)Things that I would really like to see:1.) Direct interface to the iPhone Contact List. At the moment, all addresses (other than searches of the GPS database) have to be entered manually. This to me, is a MUST HAVE!2.) Add the ability to change between 2D and 3D screens while GPS is in use.3.) I personally would prefer Device Based Maps, especially when signal is not available or EDGE is the only signal available.4.) I would like to be able to use the phone while the GPS continues to operate, though I assume this is limited by the lack of background tasking, which I assume, is a limitation imposed by Apple, not the application.HL

Good start AT&T's Navigator works quite well after testing it out today. The voice Turn-By-Turn needs to be easier to understand, but I think a large part of my inability to understand certain words is due to the speaker on the iPhone, as it has never been great at handling certain tones.
Since AT&T offers a 30 day free trial (not advertised — but should be!), it's worth downloading to test it out.
I do agree with other reviewers that the price is a bit steep and while this app does not integrate the iPod into it it does have some very handing features, such as:
The ability to search for gas stations and see current price along route;
Buisinesses on route;
Traffic conditions;
And a host of other information that all GPS units should have. Since it's free for the first 30 days, why not try it out?
