Disappointing, virtually unusable for lots of feeds I have been a NetNewsWire user on my Mac for about as long as the application has existed, paying for the application back when it was a commercial product. And I really like it, on the desktop.But as a newsreader on the iPhone, it's, well, not very good. First of all, my list of newsfeeds is in the hundreds, and unread news items in the thousands. That's usable in the desktop version. But on the iPhone version, it gets really, really, really slow. When loading the application my iPhone pretty much locks up for 10-15 seconds, and has long pauses to think when trying to scroll through the feeds, etc. If it wasn't for the progress spinner in the bottom right corner, I might think my iPhone was locked up totally.Worse, for some reason NetNewsWire (like NewsGator on the web) seems to think that my feeds should be listed in alphabetical order. That makes the application unusable. I have way too many feeds, I *need* the organization that I put a lot of effort into on the desktop version. I don't know why that organization (folders, manually ordered feeds, etc.) is completely discarded by the iPhone version.What I want is to have one or two folders from the desktop version be marked as syncable to the iPhone, so that I can get just a dozen or two feeds on the portable device. That'll make the list managable, and no doubt also deal with the lockups that come from so much network access. What I'll probably do is create an entirely different account at NewsGator, and add those feeds to that account. But that will totally lose the usefulness that syncing read/unread status, clippings, etc. between iPhone and desktop could give me.I'm sure the answers are not easy; the user interface issues are complicated, and NewsGator I'm sure wanted to have something ready for the opening of the App Store. So hopefully NetNewsWire will get better. But as it stands, it's just not the tool to use for newsreading on an iPhone, unless you give up all syncing back to your desktop. - NetNewsWire review by Alderete
Nice idea, but Those of us who are power users of NetNewsWire on the mac and have a lot of subscriptions, the iPhone application gets so bogged down downloading feeds that it is virtually unusable. I'm hoping they give us some more options for at least choosing a smaller subset of subscriptions or at least make it snappier with the larger set. I thought it was just ok in its initial release, but with the numerous improvements the application is becoming a "must-have" that is friendly to use. Thank you for the update. Mark as unread The one thing that makes this app unusable for me is the lack of a "mark as unread" button, so I can go and follow up on a story later when I am at my desktop. A Great App I use NNW of my Mac as well as my iPhone. This recent update introduced some great features, and it hasn't crashed once. I would like to see the ability to manage clippings on the phone, and I liked the previous version's way of managing read items. I want to still be able to look back through some feeds from time to time. This new way to manage removes them once you mark them as read. Awesome! The latest update fixes almost all of the issues I had with the original release and performance is much improved. This is by far my favorite app and I can't wait until all of your revisions are pushed out by Apple. Bzzzt, try again NewsGator. Sadly, the dedicated iPhone/iPod app is more cumbersome to use and loads far more slowly than the NewsGator Mobile site on my iPhone. Disappointing I was excited that this would be the killer app for me, but it just does not work well. It's slow and locks up. Works Fine | Limited features, but more to come... The Good: syncs with your Newsgator account so all your unread feeds can be read on-the-go; web pages can be viewed within the application (this is my favorite feature because many feeds only have partial syndication)
The Bad: syncing/downloading takes a bit long; it crashes every so often; very limited features: no emailing/sharing articles, no viewing of clippings folder, etc; interface needs work: article titles' font too big, number of unreads don't show if feed name is too long, and a few other little things
The Bottom Line: NetNewsWire has it's problems and limited features, but it works fine and there is much improvement and many new features to come. This is a very promising app and I'm happy they released it even though it's a very early prototype. - NetNewsWire review by iamse7en
Simple, easy to use, great I use NNW for iPhone more than any other app. I travel a lot and am in sales so it helps to keep in touch with my customers, competitors and vertical. Good first shot I like this so far, but would hope that we see some new features in future updates. Especially:1. Collapsible folder structures - the app shows your folder structure like on the web client, but doesn't allow you to collapse the folder structure for easier viewing2. Related point - there should be a 'back to feeds' button when you're in a particular story so you don't have to ascend nested hierarchies one level at a time2. For me, large quantity of feeds synced from desktop leads to slow performance and crashes I have a lot of feeds from my desktop version - things synced up nicely, but while it was working for me, it was very slow. And now it is in a unrecoverable crash state -- each time it launched it either crashes immediately, or tries to load the feed currently in focus, but then crashes before it can. Launched Prematurely Can't get it to work at all. Entered my account information, watched it sync up and then...nothing. No feeds. Went to newsgator.com added the location as an additional (why wouldn't you just tell me to do that NNW?) and still, nothing. I use this everyday! While this app had some initial problems, they have been fixed. I use it everyday to check my feeds. It syncs with newsgator which means I can check feeds online or at home and everything is synced always.
I do wish that you could view your clippings from the iPhone and that there was a way to mark something unread. But other than that, I have no complaints!

On track to be the best iPhone RSS reader. Funny, in my mind its only real competitor is Newsgator Online.To ye of little faith, who have so harshly judged v1.0, I say look no further than the release notes for the latest version (1.0.7, but iTunes is calling it 1.0.1). Brent Simmons is a top-notch developer who is always working to better the user experience. Stay tuned, as I KNOW this app is just going to keep getting better and better. So many of my concerns have been addressed in this release, I'm amazed. Compare the "what's new in this version" message with any other such message in the AppStore, and you'll see why Brent's work speaks for itself.That said, the only remaining item on my wishlist for this app is landscape mode. - NetNewsWire review by punkassjim

Good but needs some basic features added Really need to be able to read "read items", this is more important for news bulletin like BART advisories. There are other feed I sometimes do a quick read and go back and read it again. Ability to read clippings is good too otherwise no sense to allow you to save it from the iPhone. I know I can read it with the web or OSX client but should be able to do it on the iPhone too. Generally very well done! Personally, I found NetNewsWire to work generally flawlessly. It is a smidge sluggish with lots of feeds (I have around 50), but we're talking about a split-second hesitation every now and then. I've already read dozens of articles with it, and never felt like I was struggling with the system.The fact that it syncs with my other NewsGator clients on my Desktop and laptop is great.I would also like to see the ability to mark a feed as "unread" just so I could finish reading it at the home or office.Overall a really good app...looking forward to the next version! - NetNewsWire review by siliconkibou
