Waste of time   Just an excuse to link to their content with the built in browser instead of actually creating a useful app.

Variety   I am enjoying the Variety application. The only con for me are the numbers of articles to be read that pop up on application icon on the iphone. If I had the option to remove those I would rate this application a 5 star.

Update a major improvement   Finally, the Variety iPhone developers listen to the users and make some excellent improvements to the app. No more linking to the site to read articles. The photo galleries are optimized for the device and the annoying updater on the app button is gone (hated how it would tally every new piece of content I hadn't read. Good job with the update!

Best Trade News App for iPhone!!!   This app is a must have for those in the entertainment industry! I no longer need to have 10+ Variety.com news feeds on my RSS reader, or have to try and navigate the full site on the iPhone's smallish screen. I still read my copy of Daily Variety each morning, but check then check the app for the latest updates while sitting in L.A. traffic or in my free moments throughout the day. It's ease of use and large print are just want you'd expect in a great app. However, in future updates Variety needs to add TV ratings & pilot pick-ups. This app is not a substitution to reading the trade papers but it works as a great compliment them.

Just a sub par rss reader   Let me know when it turns into a real app and not just an RSS reader with window dressing.

Constantly crashing   This app seems to crash every two minutes, which is pretty frustrating.
Then there is the fact that it takes two steps to get from the headline to the story. When you tap on the headline it takes you to a summary page. Then you tap on the story AGAIN to get to actually read it. All the time you are waiting for page loads at each step. But the silliest part is that there is a story summary on the main page. I can't imagine why anyone would want to see TWO story summaries before they get to the story.
Finally, due to the format, the print is extremely small in portrait orientation. When you switch to landscape orientation the print is big enough to read, but there is very little space for the actual story. You have the iPhone OS icon bar at the top of the page. Then you have the toolbar for the Variety app below that. And at the bottom of the page there is another wide bar for advertising. This only leaves room for about four lines of the story text, which leaves you scrolling constantly. Frustrating.

No time was spent testing   It appears as though this was rushed out. The photo browser is ridiculous.. Come on you have to do better than a miniscule view of a web page.

NEED TO UPGRADE READ ARTICLES   It is so annoying to see a number next to the icon, this program doesn't delete read articles. Hoping they correct this right away.

Crashes all the time and should have offline viewing   I like this app and think the interface is okay, but it continuously crashes on me whenever I try to navigate the site. It also will only let you read headlines and short summaries of the articles when you are offline. The designer should consider making it more like the AP newsfeed app, which downloads the stories directly to the phone when you open it so you can read them offline as well. Like another reviewer said, the app would also be better if it wasn't just linking you directly to the website.

Too Crash Happy   Too often I would be reading an article then exit to list and program would crash out for no reason.
Also they need a way to Mark All Articles as READ.

Just a portal to Variety.com website   The designers should look at other, better news app, particularly Mobile News (AP), NYT and USA Today. Users should understand that they're not getting a news reader with this app, but simply a set of links to the Variety.com website on a mobile browser, which is clunky in practice, particularly if you want to read several stories in one sitting. (You're having to go back and forth from the app to the website.) Why can't the full stories be served within the app itself, as the aforementioned apps do? Also, the app has the annoying feature of displaying the number of unread stories in those big, red balloons. If this app is determined to do this, it would be nice to have a "mark all as read" button.

Poor Execution   Unstable, read counts only get updated if you actually click on an article, and links to stories just redirect you to the variety website.

Annoying   Can't stand the red bubble that tells you how many items you have not read. Too much marketing no news.

Not even worth it for FREE   This app just annoys me. The ICON always has the "update" number being display. You can never keep up with reading all the articles to get that number to stop displaying. Then you open the app and all the small icons at the bottom have numbers attached for unread articles. They think I am going to read all the articles? Plus, there is nothing interesting to read. Don't they get the message! Look how many neg reviews this app has.

Don't show   Please don't show the of articles that we don't ever see them yet in the icon. Because some time we don't want to read them all.
Thanks
