Extremely Disappointing I was eagerly awaiting this app and downloaded as soon as I could. I was immediately struck by all the things the app can't do. You can't filter out your previous finds. You can't log your finds in the field. You can't use it to plan trips. Geopher lite is much more powerful than this app. The only disadvantage to Geopher is that you have to manually enter the coordinates, but that is because of the restrictions that Groundspeak has placed on that developer. If you want to do everything while you are in the field with this application, you will have to log onto Geocaching.com and enter the cache number to pull up its page and enter your comments. So, you're going to have to do something manually, regardless of whether you are using Geocaching or Geopher Lite. Save yourself $8.00 and use Geopher Lite until Groundspeak makes their application ready for primetime. - Geocaching review by Bama Cacher
A good start Like everyone else, I've been anticpating this app ever since Groundspeak put it up on their website. And finally, I saw it was ready for download. I use the iPod Touch so I didn't know if it would do much for me or not. But it does enable me to look up caches anywhere I have WiFi, but then again--I could just use the Touch to go onto geocaching.com and get the same info. However, this downloads all the most important info into the Touch so you can go paperless. Just remember to "save" before turning it off so that it's still there when you're out of WiFi range. So all in all--I think this is well worth the price. And like everyone else, I'll be looking forward to future upgrades. - Geocaching review by ColumbusMark
Absolutely the Best App in the Store This is the killer app. The one that finally makes geocaching available to the masses. Simple, intuitive and shows that a ton of work must have gone into development. If you have never geocached, it is one of the best hobbies that you can participate in with your family. All around you - in every state and around the world, people have hidden treasures for you to hunt, find, log - take a prize and leave one for the next person to find. There are thousands upon thousands of them - but they are hidden from sight. This application lets you participate in on one of the best kept secret unknown hobbies. Not only that, but since you have already bought the phone, the hobby is super inexpensive. Just remember to be discreet and not let the muggles catch you - don't want to ruin the treasures for all of us seekers. I would pay $30 for this application and still not complain for all the hours of entertainment that is now available for my family simply by carrying around my phone. - Geocaching review by ljmjag
Nice start, but needs more Glad to see this application finally show up on the App Store. It is a good start, but it is missing some pretty critical features. For me personally, I would like to see these thre things added for the next revision:1. Ability to log in so that I can filter out the caches I have already found.2. Ability to log my finds and Trackables3. Ability to see a map with the caches around me, and select from that view which caches to hunt.The list of caches around me is ok, but a map is essential to figure out which caches are most interesting and muggle free. $10 is cheap when you consider the cost of a true GPS, so this app is worth it, specially when and if they improve it with the suggestions above. - Geocaching review by Jpons
Impressed & Optimistic First off. Great job Groundspeak, you've built a solid app. I look forward to your updates. A few definites I would like to see in the first update would be:
- The filters everyone else has been talking about on the cache search.
- Logging the find directly from my iPhone.
Other than that. Think u done a wonderful job. I was already using Safari & Google Maps to go paperless. This is a big help with the save feature.
As for everyone talking about fair play and sharing. Yes the community does place the data on geocaching.com but do you think all that bandwidth and web server functionality is free? I don't blame Groundspeak one bit for wanting to maintain a competitive edge over the competition by not sharing data on THEIR servers. For those that say they have lost respect for Groundspeak about this. You've obviously never owned your own business. It's competitive enough without giving your competition a leg up on you.

Disappointed, but hopeful I, like many others, have been checking the app store daily while waiting for this app to pop up. This was one of my primary reasons for purchasing an iPhone in the first place.
I feel like the many shortcomings present in this initial release have been well documented in the other reviews and on the geocaching forums. What I would like to address is Groundspeak's poor sportsmanship.
Geopher lite has been out for months now, with constant updates from the creator and lots of communication from the developer by use of his blog. When he approached Groundspeak about obtaining permission to scrape the coordinates for caches he was constantly given the runaround, until finally Groundspeak amazingly decided to launch their own app.
Enter the geocaching forums debate. When the new app was first announced, a discussion thread was opened to talk about the app. Any time a person mentioned ANYTHING about another app the moderators came down very hard on them, saying that this was only the place to talk about Groundspeak's app, nobody elses. As if it had already been released and there was no need to compare it to anything else.
I'm all for fair competition and everything, and yes, technically Groundspeak does 'own' the cache info stored on their site. I would be willing to bet however that the majority of members of the geocaching community would feel that the information belonged to the community, and being secretive and possesive of it seems to go against the spirit of geocaching.
I have great hopes for this app, including the ability to see pictures posted by the creator of a cache, since these are often vital clues. Fix the problems and start to earn back my respect Groundspeak! - Geocaching review by TuxedoKMax
Way cool! Worth the price I've been waiting for Groundspeak to get into the iPhone Apps biz.
A solid Geocaching App that works well and integrates the geocaching.com site listings nicely.
Very simple and easy to use interface.
I just wish the iPhone 3G GPS would be more accurate and faster when using a compass. Other than that this App is very nice and fun!
Oh yeah! I just sold my Garmin Colorado and will use this App with my iPhone 3G to go geocaching.

Woo Hoo! It's about time! Love this app. Finally I can cache anytime even when I leave home without my garmin, because my iPhone is ALWAYS with me. Only complaint is the inability to log cache finds. Good start, but lacking some key features ... Well, this is a good start. I like the interface and while I was initially concerned about not being able to load an offline GPX file, the "save" feature allows picking out the few key caches for a planned run where you might be out of range of a signal. But ... the application doesn't use my identity to allow me to filter out those caches which I've already found (how annoying), it doesn't return "members only caches" (how really annoying and as a member, it makes the app unusable for many caches), it doesn't let me tag a cache as found from the field (extremely handy -- like geocache navigator on BB), and it doesn't let me use a GC-code as the center point for a search (I can search for a specific GC, but such a query returns only the one cache from which I need to read the writeup and re-query with the coordinates). Being able to do the latter, let's you easily target an area distant from you and "save" any caches nearby which might be of interest.So, it's a good start, but hopefully these key features (especially the "members only" and "found filter") will be coming in short order and then I can raise my rating and recommend every geocacher purchase it. - Geocaching review by Lasagna329
Great app for beginners like me! I'm a newbie geocacher (just been doing it a few days), and this was great for beginners. Almost there here are some things I cant even imagine they didnt include in the first release like filtering out your hides and finds, I sure dont want to see a list of stuff Ive already found! Or at least there should be a check mark by the listing showing I have found it already. But I think the problem here is it doesnt recognize who you are. Like geopher lite gives you the ability to log in to your geocaching account and it will know who you are.Soon as they add this feature I think this will be the best app ever. It really needs to have a feature that lets you log into your geocaching account to filter out caches you have found, also the ability to log finds in the field and see icons for Tbs and coins in the search results I think is a must.Other than that I am Extremely happy with this app!!! Love it! I had stopped Geocaching lately, but back at it today with the new app. Compass was a little erratic, but between that and the map application, we found the simple cache without too much trouble. Great Application Well done application. I like the option that if you use the map feature and go back to the application, it keeps your log page. Haven't used the compass to find a cash, but just walking around a little bit, it seems to work well. The ability to filter finds and log caches will be a nice upgrade.I'd also like a feature to see search results in google maps rather than in a list, with selectable caches. I'm sure that it's a lofty goal, but shouldn't be that much different that the native maps program that allows you to obtain additional information on a search item by selecting the red pin in places there.Love the searchable feature by address that lets you use your address book.
