iTalk Lite is the free version of iTalk Recorder App. It has most of the same recording features, but with an unobtrusive ad bar at the bottom of the screen instead of advanced playback controls. Excellent! This is by FAR the best recording app for the iPhone for virtually any use.
Aside from the ability to record voice notes, meetings etc. the most impressive function is for live audio recordings. Griffin has a foolproof interface as well.
Although mono, I would compare this to Edirol, Sony and Roland field recorders. I can simply place the iPhone anywhere and capture a great scratch track using a 2 watt practice amp or a 120 tube watt half stack at any volume! In metal there are a ton of fast riffs and nuances which the iTalk app handles with no problem.
Sound quality is UNREAL at CD(high) and records in AIFF format. Using iTunes, you can simply one click to compress each file easily to an mp3 for email sharing.
I wish the level meter could be utilized before recording began however this is really a small complaint. The Griffin desktop program quickly backs up all files through wifi and could not be more automatic.
I have tried almost every recording app available for the iPhone and this is amazing considering that it is free! The sound quality and ability to transfer files beats any "gimmicks" from similar apps which all fail with sub-par sound quality. Great job Griffin!

Problem I installed this app and loved it, but then I could not backup my iPhone. Called apple customer service and after being on the phone with them for an hour with no help. I found out looking up the problem on line that it was this app. I deleted the app and all the saved recorded files I had and no more backing up problem.

Quality Company, Rough Product The interface on the iPod touch / iPhone is attractive but the need for a standalone desktop app to transfer your files to your computer is, um, ancient. The product needs to use Wi-Fi and a web address/file listing to get at your data. And don't require me to have an FTP address for your product. I think it has potential, and perhaps the Pro version contains that potential; but, this free version doesn't cut it for me when so many other recorders are available for less than $4.99 (iTalk .. Pro)

Can not record "telephone" conversations! This app, like the rest of the recording apps currently available for the iPhone, can not record your telephone conversations. The description says that it can record "conversations" (which is technically true) but it should really include a disclaimer explaining that this does not mean that it can record telephone recordings. I wasted 30 minutes trying to get it to work. Hopefully this review will save some of you the time of trying. I also had trouble recording with my headset. Am I the only one bothered by the banner ads in this app? When getting my iPhone, the last thing I was expecting was apps with banner ads, particularly with links/buttons right next to the buttons one normally uses. I'm impressed with this recorder, the sound quality is acceptable and the interface works well. However, I would rather buy the app outright for a dollar or two than see blinking banner ads on the bottom of the screen. I think Griffen calling this app "free for a limited time" is somewhat incredulous since they have clearly added the adverts to monetize their work. Killer! The guys at Griffin have done it again. Their innovation and understanding of the community's needs constantly amaze me. But, all love for Griffin aside, this is the absolute bestvoice recorder for the iPhone / iPod Touch out there. Audio quality is stellar. As a podcaster, I plan to use this for on the spot interviews and etc. The UI is unsurpassed. Keep it up guys!

Works on my 2G Touch! Nice app! It works on my Touch running 2.1.1 firmware. Recordings are extremely clear. Found an inexpensive mic at Target for $9.99. If you're interested, it's a Phillips iPhone Microphone adapter SHH1610. Good but not great I've tried most of the voice recorders for iPhone. This one is good but not great. On my iPhone, the lag time between launching the app and hitting the record button is too long. And playback volume is a little low, which is not insignificant since the app's main functions are recording and *playback.* The ability to transfer recordings over wifi is nice, though. Excellent - No surprise!! This app. works exactly as billed and I am very excited about the potential uses. I have used the Griffin iTalk Mic in conjunction with an iPod classic in the past and have had mixed results depending on placement. Placement will be equally as important when utilizing this app but my initial tests at this point are helping me realize what a high quality microphone Apple built into the iPhone 3G. Based on what I'm hearing, I would have no qualms at all about recommending the use of iTalk Recorder as a mobile podcasting unit for capturing Audio podcasts. This app. is definitely a game changer as it relates to iPhone recording apps. especially being that its free. I suspect the free will be an introductory thing. Slick, excellently functional, sounds great Griffin usually gets things right, and they really nailed this one. Intuitively designed app, easy to use, and it's making great use of the onboard microphone. Recordings at "Better" or "Best" quality sound excellent. The desktop app to retrieve recordings works a treat. I'd love to see a record-level control (in case I'm in a really noisy environment) but as a radio producer, having this app on my iPhone makes me much better equipped when I run into a story unexpectedly.
