POWERFUL Application! One word.....WOW. I recently purchased this app for 20 bucks, and like everyone else said, it is worth every penny. BeatMaker is surprisingly powerful. Although it is not fully featured like the actual samplers or production studios, for this kind of instrument to be available for use on a mobile device is a break through. The interface is smooth, graphics are visually pleasing, the sample tracks in the library sounds great, and the list goes on. Having had a Roland MV-8800, I didn't expect the app to have all the features an actual production studio would, but BeatMaker still has the basics and a whole lot more to run some sick beats.The 16 multi-touch pads are VERY responsive. Unlike other related apps, you can actually make some sweet beats using two or more fingers without it lagging (this is crucial because music demands strict timing). It would be even better if it had at least 1/4 GB worth of patches in it's library, and live recording using the iPhone's mic. Although these two features are not available NOW, I'm guessing it will be in the future updates.Overall, for a 1.0.0 version, BeatMaker by Intua is very powerful and surpasses any other related apps. Later versions will be even BETTER, and Am looking forward for the updates. Paying 20 bucks for a powerful mobile production studio that fits in the pocket is worth it.** Another great product to promote such apps would be an iPod cable with a 1/4" jack instead of having the usb portion. Imagine if you could connect the iPhone/iPod Touch to any pre-amped instrument that accepts a 1/4" jack for live recording or sampling. This cable would go GREAT with BeatMaker (once it has an update that allows live recording and/or sampling using the iPhone mic and/or this cable).**HINT: Apple and/or Intua....PLEASE consider making this cable. HOLY S**T!!! I had heard about this app back in June and was curious. I just downloaded it and I am speachless. As a musician who uses Reason 4.0 often, It makes me wonder if Intua used it as inspiration. The preloaded samples sound amazing and I can't wait to start loading up my own. In the 30 min worth of time I have spent with it, I can tell that I will be using this App quite often for gigs. Perfect for open mics when you need that extra soundtrack but don't want to bring all the gear. I can only imagine what will come from updates in the future. How cool is it that I can make beats on the fly. I imagine battery life won't be so good. Gonna need to start bringing my power adaptor with me. lol - BeatMaker review by Butternut8000
These reviews are from a bunch of cheapskates! Seriously now, all you crybabies whining about the price need a reality check. So you got a free version on your jailbroken iPhone? Great, now you can actually pay and help support development of these apps. Coding good software doesn't happen on it's own, you guys act like a bunch of spoiled rich kids who expect everything in life to be handed to you on a silver platter without having to do any work for it. You people must have no sense of how economics work, you go around preaching your arrogant doctrine of self entitlement helping other mindless people justify why they shouldn't have to help put food on the table for developers who slave day and night to make your life more fun/convinient/productive. Get a job and get over the fact that paying for well designed software is the right thing to do.

Nice..But.. While The Beat Maker app's debut on the iPhone is a impressive thing, it's implementation may make you to wait until a few of the kinks are worked out.Cons:1. Buggy. The app will often not shut down properly, leaving a blank black screen that the user may think is a powered off iPhone. In this state the only way to exit the app is a hard restart of the phone.The initial start up of the app also quickly loaded the "home" screen of the app so fast that I could not activate any features. Annoying. Although this bug seemed to disappear after 5 or 6 attempts? Anyone else?2. Interface. While beautifully rendered I'm finding the interface is a bit confusing. The lack of a "Mixer" is a bit frustrating as I'm still trying to figure out how to apply effects, and the sequencer is a tad "fussy". In fairness to Intua I have some learning to do, but Beat Maker still not quite as simple as some people are making out. Comparisons to Reason are a bit silly....3. Lack of tutorials online or any manual. I imagine this will change but if Intua is going to charge money for this app they should at least document how the thing works. The text on the Home screen certainly does not address the issue of usability.4. No way to get files to Desktop (yet)But having said all of that, Beat Maker still worth the 20 bucks. impressive! i've used it for over an hour now and i can say that this is absolutely without a doubt worth the price tag. it's an incredible piece of software.. beautifully designed (the lyout is really perfect actually), so far it runs smoother than most other apps i purchased.. a ton of fun to mess around with and it constantly gives you that "wow.. my phone can actually do this?" kind of feeling. :) it's wonderful and i highly recommend it.. it will be even better when the release the free "beatpack" software that will allow you to upload your own sound files. they say it's coming very soon. can't wait! incredible. highly recommended. - BeatMaker review by wilcothedog
A Pro Audio App that promises updated functionality. Having spent a week or so using this app (and haunting Intua's forums), I'm pleased to report that, not only is this a beautifully-designed sample sequencer that is intelligently laid-out, but the design team appears to be tireless in the pursuit of improving and updating things. The recently-added user manual (in PDF, available on the Intua site) already shows the improvements and additions that we can expect in ver. 1.1. They listen closely to the community, and seem to be very attentive to requests for updating the functionality and hammering out the bugs (of which there are few).With that being said, I am very pleased with the app, and I have already created and exported several completed tracks, whilst lolling around on the sofa. Then, I just export the mixdown file and open it into GarageBand for further tweaking. It's the ease of use that enables one to actually be productive on such a platform, and the iPhone / Touch interface is absolutely perfect. I had a program called "TraxxPad" for the PSP, and it was a very comprehensive package, but navigating the thing w/ joystick and shoulder-buttons was such a chore, it was discouraging to even get started.With the iTouch (my device), putting together a full-blown track with Beatmaker is as easy as falling off a log. The samples sound great (despite other comments to the contrary), and the BeatPack software (for your PC / Mac -- *free*), allows you to easily create new sound banks. Anyone who dogs this program isn't really making the effort to examine the broad feature-set that Intua has made available. f you're looking for "iRock Band", look elswhere. This is a real production tool for artists. That's not to say that you have to be a trained musician to use it; you just need a desire to be creative, and a little patience for coming to grips w/ the interface.Hopefully, they will expand the recording capabilities to allow 8 or 16 bars, as one glaring limitation is the 4-bar limit on patterns. Along w/ a few other upgrades (tempo changes for different passages; more FX, like reverb or phaser), this will be a 5-star app. In its current form, I give it a solid 4. - BeatMaker review by icepulse
Really good program Bought this with a gift card so it wasn't a hit on my personal finances, so it's tough to balance my review without having to have actually *paid* for it. It's very well done and I enjoy both the pads and the sequencer, I figured out how to start laying out the patterns in the sequence to start making beats and that's really great. I love that I can upload my own samples to it, which I haven't done yet but certainly will. My only real complaint is the lack of a synthesizer of some kind and that REALLY hurts this program. Making beats is great, but there's no way for me to lay melodies over it (except via samples and that's just not feasible). I don't want all that much, I don't need a guitar and a bass and a piano like Band, though it would be nice, but I would REALLY like just any kind of keyboard so I can at least lay down a major melody and then start building on it on my home machine.I use ProTools and Reason so I know that I'm asking a lot, but it's just that without a synthesizer, the program just loses that necessary step for me to really work with it and instead becomes more of a hobby kind of thing. Kick back at the pub, make a beat while I drink a beer - but if I had a synthesizer, I could make a SONG. If Intua puts in a synthesizer, it will definitely be worth the money in a heartbeat and I would recommend it to all my friends. As it is now, I tell them it's a great toy, but I'd love to sit down and get serious with this.Other things that would be helpful: A 4 or 8 count metronome click before recording , a way to extend samples (instead of just one block in the sequencer) and a way to change time signatures (4/4 is nice but what about 5/4 triplets? or 3/4 or 6/8?), MIDI EXPORT (this is asking a bit much and isn't really necessary but while I'm asking...) and that would pretty much satisfy all my wants.Maybe then it would be worth a lot more than $20, I don't know, but if I could get at least the synthesizer I'll work with this program every day. - BeatMaker review by JB2.0

Fantastic in theory, a couple issues in practice I absolutely loved its predecessor (BeatPhone), and BeatMaker is almost there in delivering on its promise of bringing a DAW to the iPhone. However, I have a couple odd issues: 1) I can't hear anything when in step sequencer mode. Edits made there do seem to take effect, but I have to go back into "Pad" mode to hear them, 2) I cannot hear anything, regardles of mode, unless I arm "record"; hitting play without also hitting record just returns silence. I wonder if I'm alone with these issues? Maybe its a 1.0.0 thing (the current version) that will be fixed.Outside of that, though, its an incredible app. The included loops/samples are many and diverse, and the interface is amazingly intuitive for such a complex app. - BeatMaker review by funkboy3

A Reason to get an iPhone. A lot of these reviews seem to be in the "great app, but..." region. Well let's start there:This App is not: a trimmed down version of Reason, a synth program, or a tone generator. You can create new sounds but they will be only modifications of current sample sounds.This App IS: a sample-centric musical sound organization program. All of the sounds come from samples. It comes with hundreds of them: different bases and drums, sound effects, etc. You can make and download more from the web or on your Mac. If you have an iPhone, you can record them live.First, you can use a preset sample kit, or you can build your own kit from any set of samples in the program. Get a bass drum here, a snare there, maybe a clip from last night's karaoke. Each clip can be snipped shorter from either end, have the pitch changed, or volume adjusted. Even certain (re: limited) effects can be applied. Then, when your kit's ready, you can move to the sequencer and build up a song with myriads of beat tracks activating and deactivating at different times. You can change an overall beat pattern in the effects processors, change the attacks and more. When you're done, save it and play it, or share online.Can you make new music? Well, yeah, sorta. Will you find that wizzy new sound that makes all the girlies scream? Probably not. But being able to kick out something dancable on the fly is absolutely astounding.
