WeatherBug Weather - iPhone Application 3 Stars

WeatherBug reviewed by Users

Very nice for what it does...  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Easy to use and fast. Nice looking. However in addition to the severe weather alerts, I would have liked to have seen the app use the iPhone's sounds to alert me. If the phone is in my pocket the alerts don't do me any good unless there is some sort of audio to tell me to take the phone out of my pocket. The radar should zoom into my current area, not show me a map of all the radars around the globe. - Version 1.0 - Jul 10, 2008 - WeatherBug review by bdkennedy
Angering Users is Bad Strategy  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I was going to delete WeatherBug today for being not nearly as good as other weather apps, when I saw it offered a downgrade to an ad-supported version with new features. I was impressed by the developer's candor in explaining why something with potential was being downgraded instead, even as it was obvious the developer knew he was stupid for poisoning his app, and I realized other weather apps are similarly plagued with ads, so I decided to check out the new features. Most prominent is the reliable new Auto Crash feature, making WeatherBug too unstable to evaluate. Other weather apps are allowed ads because they made the mistake of having them from the beginning, and people expect them from large commercial entities who do not offer paid versions. WeatherBug violates the culture of the AppStore. Free versions are accepted as demos with less functionality than paid versions. Free versions that say, "Drop dead; you're second-class to us developers if you won't pay" do not earn endearment. Research shows that adware fails in this marketplace. This version is the beginning of the end for WeatherBug, especially with its nagging instability. There is hope. The developer could urgently pull the downgrade from the store and rethink the strategy of which features in a free version would move folks to buy a paid version -- if a paid version is viable in a market crowded with good freeware. The new free version then would have to comply with the other dictate of the App Store's culture, which is never to remove features in a supposed upgrade. Whatever good new features are in this poisoned version will have to stay when the ads are removed. The decision to change from legible Google maps to scrappy Microsoft maps is deplorable. It lowers the quality of the maps while forcing users to support Redmond, other incentives to delete the app. WeatherBug has great potential if the author would pull the ads, fix the crashing, and restore the maps. Also needs to swap the slider for choosing saved locations to a pick list, matching its competitors' faster, superior interface. - Version 1.2 - Apr 24, 2009 - WeatherBug review by Bozocity
Nice weather app, radar needs improvements  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Nice and simple (and free) weather app. I like that the radar is over a Google Map, so you can scroll/zoom in exactly where you want. However the radar isn't animated, a big drawback. - Version 1.0 - Jul 11, 2008 - WeatherBug review by pb30
Exciting Features / A Little Rough Yet  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
This app shows great promise. I like the information it provides over and above the official Apple weather app (wind speed, humidity, etc), and especially like the breakdown of the weather during the day.I can still tell the current weather status at a glance on the official Apple weather app with much greater ease, and I dislike that only a three-day forecast is provided. Radar looks wonderful, but even after finding my location automatically, the app forced me to zoom in on my state/region from a world map. The option to change opacity on the radar features seems entirely unnecessary and takes up lots of room. I'm also rarely interested in seeing weather from multiple locations, and dislike wasting precious screen real estate with a location-picker.I definitely recommend this application to other users (especially at its current price), but suggest some UI tweaking to the developers. - Version 1.0 - Jul 10, 2008 - WeatherBug review by btraut
Not bad, but buggy  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
It crashed three times while I was trying to delete the two default locations and replace them with my own. Make sure you hit save for every action when you're editing the configuration, so if it does crash you don't have to start over at the beginning.I also noticed that when I went to the radar view, it was zoomed all the way out to earth level view. It would have been handy for it to start out zoomed into the location I had configured.Overall it looks promising. The idea of having local webcam pictures is pretty cool, though there were only 3 in my "area" (all were 20 or 30 miles away). This is in a city of several million people. Maybe it's a really new idea that hasn't taken off yet.Fix the crashes, animate the radar, and I'd give it five stars. - Version 1.0 - Jul 11, 2008 - WeatherBug review by Rootus
Nice. Pretty interface  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Could use the animated radar though - Version 1.0 - Jul 10, 2008 - WeatherBug review by smith288
Great Weather App  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
I always strayed from using WeatherBug on my desktop or other mobile devices, but being that it was available for free through the App store, gave it a shot. With a great, easy to use interface, its a nice addition to the already installed "basic" weather info program on the iPhone for additional weather detail info. The only drawback is that initally (perhaps fixed in a later update) is that when going to the radar map link to Google maps, the entire globe was displayed and not the specific location placed in the apps settings. - Version 1.0 - Jul 10, 2008 - WeatherBug review by adam378
No moving radar  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Without moving radar this is no different than every mobile weather site on the Internet. Nothing makes this app special. - Version 1.0 - Jul 10, 2008 - WeatherBug review by Spinxter
Needs international support  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Nice app but not so useful in Australia with no support for metric units (celcius) - Version 1.0 - Jul 11, 2008 - WeatherBug review by iMarcus
Not ready  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Cool looking but has rebooted my phone three times...just removed it. - Version 1.0 - Jul 10, 2008 - WeatherBug review by RockStar
Celsius?  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
This needs to have a Celsius option. Or else not many people will be using it. Good features though - Version 1.0 - Jul 15, 2008 - WeatherBug review by Sorryimlate2
Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Everytime I would select current location when adding a new city, the app would crash. - Version 1.0 - Jul 11, 2008 - WeatherBug review by Twistyawig
Powerful, robust little app.   Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Cons: Radar shows world map first in lieu of local view. You can only have 3 locations saved at a time. They seriously need to update that. Weather condition icons are pretty cheesy. Pros: More specific than a general weather app. You can view the weather and webcam photo of a participating school or business. Very cool! Animated wind beacon shows which way the wind is blowing. Far more info here than in Apple's built in weather widget, without having to go to Safari. Very useful app that is free! This one is a keeper, but I really hope they update it. - Version 1.0 - Jul 14, 2008 - WeatherBug review by freelancing
Nothing to see here  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
They just ported a dashboard widget to the iPhone. I'll keep using the mobile WeatherUnderground.com for the weather I need, when I need it. Even ForeFlight's awesome mobile app uses wunderground.com for it's weather. - Version 1.0 - Jul 13, 2008 - WeatherBug review by mladd
Better than web app version  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Could be better. More details than web app and I like the radar functionality a lot better. Although when I first set-up my location it was zoomed out to the whole world instead of the location I had selected. Once I zoomed in it seems to retain my radar location between sessions. Ability to animate the radar would kill! "Current Location" function when adding a location does not seem to work on 1st gen iphone, although it works in other apps. Shows non-functional navigation triangles even when only one location is set-up. Switching between locations does not update radar (boo!). ALSO KEEPS CRASHING MY IPHONE! BOO! - Version 1.0 - Jul 11, 2008 - WeatherBug review by mcoyne
Good App  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Works well. I find it much better then the stock weaather app on the iphone. The ability to see the radar picture and wind speed are cool. - Version 1.0 - Jul 10, 2008 - WeatherBug review by Raptor2142
Great for Cyclist   Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Wake up check weather bug! Ride bike check weather bug. Going outside check weather bug. - Version 1.0 - Jul 10, 2008 - WeatherBug review by Luv2bik
Disappointing  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
Developers: check out wunderground.com to see what a weather app should look like. And the radar ... Really? Really? That's what you submitted to the app store? 2 stars because you didn't charge for it. - Version 1.0 - Jul 13, 2008 - WeatherBug review by scottkle
Good start...  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
It is an improvement over iPhone's included weather app as far as info provided, but the iPhone's still looks prettier. Few drawbacks as well, yes, radar isn't animated, and you do have to zoom the map to your location yourself from the default global view. Also, while the alert function is neat, with the little red number bubble popping up to signal an alert (same as if you receive a text or voicemail), checking the alert doesn't get rid of the little red number (like when you read the text or check the voicemail), and there's no easy way to follow up on info about the alert. For example my area has a current alert, but it simply reads "Red Flag Warning" and states its in effect until 7AM, there's nothing to click or look at to get further info. Kinda vague alert. Good start but look forward to improved weather apps in the future. - Version 1.0 - Jul 14, 2008 - WeatherBug review by Alf!
Quite disappointing...  Iphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application StarIphone Application Star
First of all, like so many other apps on here, it just doesn't really look or "feel" much like a real iPhone app...then, also like so many other apps on here, it's probably focussing solely on American users...!? While I can actually pick, for instance, Munich and get some information about the weather, the devs didn't even bother including a setting to change the temp from Fahrenheit to Celsius -- only for the rest of the western world...!? Yeah, thanks a bunch...!Also I never actually managed to get any radar pics (or any other wether pics) for my area...so it's not just ugly but also pretty useless for most people outside the US... - Version 1.0 - Jul 13, 2008 - WeatherBug review by mangaphreak
