Been waiting for this!!!   Kind of sluggish on both os 2 and 3. Of course 3 is in beta. Very useful for both iPhone and iPod but more so for the iPod. iPhone users need to understand skype is not a cell phone replacement and was never meant to be! But this does offer you chat and access to calls without using up your minutes... assuming you purchase a skype phone number. I use skype for my home phone that I can take with me wherever I go for less than $6 a month.
Note: Understand what Skype IS before commenting!!! Crashes can also be subject to other apps you may have installed... skype has not crashed at all on both of my devices. :)

Really good!   I really like the app - I've been waiting for this for a long time.
Also, make it possible to edit the number when you pull it in from iphone contacts.
Also, if you're on a Skype call and the iPhone phone rings, you get kicked out of Skype and the call is lost. That can't happen. I'm downgrading to 3 stars for that reason.

Best application for iPod Touch!!! (much better than Fring)   Thank you so much Skype for coming out with this amazing application I have been waiting for this ever since I have gotten an Ipod touch! Thank you Apple for approving this amazing application!I used Fring before this came out and I had problems all the time... I would open up the application, wait for 5 min for it to log in to try and avoid calling errors and then it would still tell me "call terminated, wait until login on". Plus the dialpad would never beep when I hit the buttons during a call so I could never acess my voicemail. Also the status I could never modify to show as invisible when I just didnt want to talk to my contacts. With this Skype application I havent had any trouble at all... its perfect. Some things which are great about it are:1) You have a great/working dialpad... This is EXTREMELY important since I have an Ipod touch and must have this to access my voicemail or to call 1(800) numbers that need me to press buttons to get to the correct dept(Fring dialpad doesnt work for this)2) Starts calling as soon as you press the call button... with Fring you press call and can wait about 4-5 rings on the application before the call actually goes through3) You can modify your status... I sometimes want to be invisible from my friends and with Fring I could never modify my status it always showed as online4) Your contact list automatically transfer's as soon as you sign in... wowI have an Ipod touch so I cannot wait for the new Iphone 3.0 firmware update (for ipod touch too) to come out so that I can connect my bluetooth headset in order to make phone calls on Skype without having to buy a funky external microphone to make calls. I really just cannot believe how great it is that Apple allowed this application on iTunes! I mean, this application allows people to make calls without using their Iphone minutes (which probably makes AT&T mad since they want people to run out of theiir 450 minutes and buy more) and yet Apple still let this thing through the appstore just to make us happy. My iPod touch is an Iphone now for me since I am always around a wifi connection (at college, library, home, or starbucks) Thank you again Apple and Skype

So many stupid reviews   So many jailbraked iPhones without Cydia updates. No wonder that your Skype crashes. Update the Cydia apps and the prob is gone.

Expected Better   This definitely needed more testing. While mine isn't crashing, as many others have reported, calls get dropped after about a minute or two. In addition, if you navigate to any other section of the app, such as My Info, or even turn off the screen on the iPhone, it automatically puts the call on hold until you get back to the Live Call. Definitely needs to be fixed. I'd really love to have my screen off to save battery life and not accidently touch any portions of the screen. Has the potential to be an excellent app for the iPhone once these issues are ironed out.

people cannot POSSIBLY be this stupid   it's called 'voice over INTERNET protocol', not 'voice over 3G'! VOICE OVER 3G IS CALLED A CELLULAR PROVIDER. of course you have to be on a WIFI network or else skype would be a cellular carrier in direct competition with AT&T and all the other providers. Why would ATT ever let skype use their network to provide $3 unlimited voice to their customers????? PLEASE go find some common sense. it's free. how on earth do you complain that a free app that is strictly voip doesn't work over EVDO? think before you review. this app is absolutely amazing. just made my phone so very very international and made all ipod touches phones. i salute you, skype, inc.

No Problems Here   I was so worried that iSkype was going to crash on me after just a couple of minutes of being in a call, like a lot of the reviews are saying, so I didn't get my hopes up and I decided to run a test call to another Skype account from my iPod Touch to my computer. I just let it sit there while I did other stuff and right now the call has been going on for 1 hour & 20 minutes and my iPod battery's about to die, so I'd say it's a blazing success. It makes me think the crashing happens more on iPhones than iPod Touches, maybe? Also, the sounds are superb - just subtle enough so that they're unobtrusive, but nice and familiar. (In the PC version of Skype, the hang-up sound always nearly bursts my eardrums. Not so on this one.) Overall, the whole interface is so nice. I love having the mute/pause buttons right there on the screen during a call. I really think they thought of everything except chat notifications during a call - but I'm sure that's soon to come since everybody's been screaming about it. For the first version of an app, I am totally impressed and happy :) Probably the most excited I've ever been to download an app. It's kinda cool that they kept it such a huge secret! I hate having to wait for stuff that I know isn't coming out for a while.OH, hey, FYI - as I've been writing this review, the 20% battery warning just popped up and it automatically put the call on hold when that happened instead of hanging up - pretty cool!!!

Worth the wait   It's been a long wait, but this app lives up to my expectations. The user interface is sleek and user-friendly. The contacts list is intuitive and well-integrated with the iPhone (you can call any of your iPhone contacts from within the app). Chats work well. Call quality is as good as you'll get with your desktop Skype application, depending on your WiFi connection. As far as stability goes, the app crashed only once, when I called my own mobile number from the app. I did not need to reset my phone.Things the app lacks: video calling (due to iPhone's single rearward-facing camera); editing of contacts' names; making calls over 3G/EDGE (an Apple-imposed limitation).

On my iPod Touch it works perfectly! A dream come true!   I have everything skype- In, Out, Voicemail, Caller ID, etc... always dreamt of having it on my iPod, now i do. Got it an hour ago- loaded right in. No crashes, logged right in to my skype account, test calls to my cell phone and back worked as it should. NOTE- I'm using an iPhone headset with a mic (tried others not Apple and the mic didn't work). So either buy the "Apple headset with mic" or permanently borrow the headphones from your friend with and iPhone who never uses it... THANK YOU, Skype and Apple! (my two favorite companies!)

New Skype app having problems on Jailbroken phones?   Update: Saurik has released a new mobile substrate and the issue is fixed. No need for intelliscreen or any other hacks. Just update mobile substrate from cydia. Update to v0.9.2803-1 (or newer) of mobile substrate. To fix the Skype crash, all mobilesubstrate based hacks are disabled on the Skype app. This means you cannot use voipover3g or backgrounder with Skype app. Do not ask how to do it or point out that it doesnt work. The developer of mobile substrate has already stated that it will not work.-The highly anticipated app for the iPhone has just been released in the US:Skype in the AppStore.Quick Fact: The voipover3g string for Skype is: com.skype.skype -All lowercaseNow the bad news. It seems that all jailbroken phones do not play well with the Skype app. I had problems getting it to work at all, the app would crash when you try to use the keyboard to login to the app. I later found out, through trial and error, the culprit for keyboard crashing is Custom Winterboard Keyboard Click Sounds and Clippy. Getting rid of the keyboard custom clicks (tock.aiff) seems to work with regular themes. Using SBSettings Clippy toggle to switch it off seemed to do the trick also. That problem, while small and fixable, is not the biggest problem. Skype seems to freeze within 30-50 seconds while in the app - no matter what you do (calling, idling, chatting, etc). I went into safe mode using SBSettings and tried out Skype - to my surprise, everything worked perfectly - I used it to talk to my friend for about 20-30 minutes. I decided to do a little bit more troubleshooting - deleting mobile substrates one by one to see if it helped or not, and then deleting them all. Nothing seemed to work, the app would still crash within one minute.I decided to run SysInfoPro and compare running processes (non-mobile substrate) between safe mode and regular mode. They both had the exact processes running at the same time.Although I didn’t delve much deeper into the problem (could have tried using Top and system logs), I have come to a conclusion that Skype crashes ONLY on jailbroken iPhones. I had a couple friends try it on their newly restored iPhones, and they worked flawlessly. Other people from multiple forums have also said it crashes non-stop for them (their iPhones also jailbroken):“I managed to download skype and tested myself. It is buggy and all the symptoms the same as described by ranova. I have tried it on a 1G phone newly updated to 2.2.1 jailbroken. The only apps I have installed is sbsettings, ierase, nimbuzz, and skype. It still crashes after 30sec or so. It has got to be the phone that is jailbroken. I have nothing on my phone other than what you get after you jailbreak.” - duceduc“2.2.1 jailbroken 3g here. It crashes after 30 - 60 seconds.” - jgsx“Confirmed - Crashes like every minute.” - ZazoxLet’s hope this isn’t an attempt from Apple or Skype to cause apps to crash only on jailbroken phones (to deter the use of voipover3g). [end conspiracy theories]Update: Saurik has just updated regarding reasons behind the crashes:“Skype seems to be using some kind of /awesome/ DRM that involves them having an entire replacement binary somehow inside of it: the one on disk doesn’t link against /anything/ ;P. Whatever its doing, though, involves stressing dyld in some weird way.Interestingly enough, its not anything MobileSubstrate does to the code: its just it existing in the process before it loads its replacement. (Which is extra weird, as the new MobileSubstrate links against almost nothing: just CoreFoundation.)”So what we know so far:* If Skype crashes when trying to input text: Disable both clippy (Use SBSettings toggle) and any custom Winterboard sounds relating to the keyboard tick (tock.aiff).* If Skype crashes within 1 minute of having the app open: We have to wait for a mobile substrate update. It works on non-jailbroken phones just fine and runs on jailbroken phones ONLY if you are in safe mode. Edit: temporary mobile substrate update is available in cydia - this update will disabled mobile substrates from running in Skype, fixing crashes - so no voipover3g, backgrounder, etc for now.Temporary fix that allows mobile substrates extensions (voipover3g, backgrounder, winterboard) to run, from Autotrade at Engadget:“For people having crashes (especially the 1 minute thing) use this FIX: I had to enable in Intelliscreen, Performance, App Boost ON and select the apps below (in my case I set Backgrounder and VoipOver3G both to ON). That fixed it, no more crashes at all, tested this on 2 iPhones.”Well there you have it - it’s now a waiting game if you do not want to uninstall Mobile Substrate or try the intelliscreen temporary (or permanant if you use IS) fix. Skype on the iPhone is amazing - sound quality sounds better than regular cell calls. I briefly tested it on T-mobile’s EDGE network (using voipover3g) and for the 30 seconds that it lasted, there was no noticable lag and quality was great! I look forward in using Skype as a regular voIP app. Thanks for all the comments and thank you saurik for looking into this.

Now when I travel the world I have a true world phone. This would be a great time 4 Apple to unlock video source so we can have a true Jetsons' phone we always wanted. This will be the #1 free app for a long time. THXS Skype & Apple. The iphone has made me an apple believer.

'Cmon 'Cmon! CRASHES AND RETURNS TO SPRINGBOARD!   Is it me or is it so hard to write a stable and working App for the iPhone. I'm so tired of these App's not working.I just don't get it. Software development is not in its' infancy. Are a majority of these developers just retards? This has gotten so tiring.Get it together and do it right or simply defer the release date. Test and then test some more. Then test again. Capache? I'm just dumbfounded by the sheer lack of professionalism. Stupid and insipid. Give us all a break. I have the balls to call it like it is. You can coddle the others.
