NYT great ap   This ap is great. I think what some people don't realize when complaining of slow speed is that it is actually loading up a whole day or more of articles and you are able to still read them even when you don't have cell or wifi service available like in a subway or on an airplane. So if you just give it sent time to download in the morning you are good to go!

Great Application. Needs Some Work.....   I'm an enthusiastic NYT reader and read the mobile web version from my iPhone daily. This application is a pretty good start. It uses the basic iPhone UI, and you can edit the four tiles at the bottom of the screen. The primary advantage to using this application, instead of the NYT website, is that the application downloads alll the stories; enabling you to read the paper offline (e.g., airplane mode or "no service'). NYT has already updated this app once to reduce the size of the ad, and I'm hoping they'll continue to improve it. The two major problems are that the stories don't appear to be updated regularly. When you compare the stories on the website with the application after it's been "updated", most of the current news stories don't appear in the application. So, if you're only interested in late breaking stories, stick with the website. Also, as noted by almsot everyone, the current update process is very, very sllooowwww. I have been updating in the morning, and it has been taking at least 3 to 5 minutes (over wifi) to retrieve the stories. Also of note is that if you go into the iphone settings, you can change the number of days of news that the application stores (1 - 7 days). Overall, it's a keeper, but I'm hoping to see another update soon.....

This could be great, but it isn't ready.   This application looks very appealing and has the functions laid out well, but it does not yet perform properly. Loading is VERY slow even on broadband connected WiFi. Some of the thumbnail images for articles don't load at all (the normal NYT website is rendered perfectly and fully in much less time).

Excellent   After a minute or two of updating, there's a huge amount of news downloaded and available for offline viewing. Just start reading. And the stories scroll all the way down... no artificial "paging".

Slow and crashes   The safari version of the NYT is a much better experience. This app crashes very frequently and is very slow to load. Only good thing is the convenient categories of the stories. Avoid this app.

Slowwwwwww   This app is unbearably slow on EDGE, and intolerably slow on WiFi. The website is better. Sorry.

runs very slowly and crashes every time   Why does Apple even allow this app to be downloaded? NYTimes' content is great but the app quits suddenly every time it is used. I gave up using it.

Cool   Faster than Safari for reading NY Times. Articles include small ads near bottom. Some pages under More were very slow at loading but they're better for me now.

Good start   Clean app and I will enjoy the offline functionality. A glaring shortcoming is that it takes you to the top of an article when switching between portrait and landscape modes- not cool.

Nice design, but too slow and unreliable   The user interface seems nice and simple. I'm able to download the "Latest News" section just fine. However, most other sections don't download anything. For example, I tried to read "Technology" news several times today. It never worked. If they can fix the reliability this might become a 4-star app.

Finally Works as Advertised!   Since the latest update, this app does indeed work as I had hoped it would. The complete text of each article (along with pictures) downloads in the morning when launch the app, which takes about 15 minutes over Wi-Fi. Make sure you disable Auto-Lock when updating: General > Auto-Lock > Never. Then, throughout the day, I am able to read the NY Times even when on the subway to and from work or on the subway platform - no Edge or Wi-Fi connection necessary - even works in Airplane Mode. At times it is a little unstable/crashy, but most apps on 2.0 still are at this point. Also, it's the New York Times for free (including Sundays!) so who am I to complain? Five Stars.

Incredible App for devoted NYT readers   Not intended to replace reading the Times with Safari, but as a great alternative for certain situations when web access is not available, i.e. on the airplane or with an Ipod Touch when a hotspot is not available. Even better, you can load up to an entire week of the Times that can be read off-line. I just load up the day's issue on my home wi-fi in the morning and then have the option to read it without web access anytime during the day.

Crashes constantly   This would be the best way to read the NYT if it didn't crash constantly. How hard can it be to fix?

Pretty, but slow and kludgy   This is the first app or web page that's really made the iPhone feel slow to me. Scrolling is jerky at best and doesn't have the lightning-fast response I've come to expect from the iPhone; even over a fast WiFi connection, it feels like it takes too long to load. When it says its 'updating,' it never gives me a status report and just seems to keep on downloading indefinitely, so I don't know its up to or if I can go to the subway and read news without a connection. Still, it is the best graphical presentation of the Times I've seen on a mobile device.

Bad reviews fail to truly understand the app   As some others have said, this app loads a great deal of news so you should give it 5-10 minutes or so before leaving home if using wifi. Overall it is a great app if you understand how to use it.
